HOUSTON — La Marque punched its ticket for a trip to Reliant Stadium with a 54-0 drubbing of Furr at Barnett Stadium in the Division II Region III-3A football playoffs.

“We had a big surprise for (the team),” La Marque head coach Mike Jackson said. “We’re playing at Reliant Stadium next Friday at 8 p.m. We’re going to be the third game of the tripleheader and that’s the marquee slot.”

La Marque’s game will be the only Class 3A contest that night. The other two games will be 5A matchups.

The Cougars (10-1) will play the winner of tonight’s Coldspring-Bridge City matchup.

Against Furr (6-4), the Cougars ran out to a 47-0 lead at the break, largely fueled by a stifling defense that gave La Marque good field position time and time again.

“The kids came out and played well,” Jackson said. “The defense was determined. They had their shutout streak snapped last week, so they were determined to come back out show out again.”

La Marque had gone 19 quarters without giving up a point before Stafford scored in the final minutes of the last regular season game.

“I told them after the game if they have another 19 quarter shutout streak, we’re playing in the state semifinals,” Jackson said.

The Cougars allowed the Brahmas just 99 yards in total offense.

Offensively, La Marque was a varied bunch, with eight people getting carries and four catching passes as the Cougars rolled up 376 yards of offense.

Demun Mercer was especially efficient at quarterback, going 8-for-8 for 121 yards and two touchdowns. One was a 35-yarder to Daniel Lee and the other was to Thomas Ward and was good for three yards.

Ladarrian Ellis led the La Marque scoring brigade with 8-, 14- and 1- yard touchdown runs and picked up 49 yards on the ground.

Alan Cooper was the big ground gainer, picking up 76 yards on seven carries and scoring on a 3-yard run.

Freshman Marvin Brown capped the La Marque scoring with a 5-yard run.
