Wharton scares me with their speed, but unless their senior QB Bartee Grissom returns from an injury, I think the Bulldogs roll in this one. Grissom makes the Tiger offense tick, but he's been down the past two weeks with what I'm told, was a broken tibia. He was injured almost a month ago, but I don't know how long those injuries take to recover from. Alfred Pinkney is a talented RB for Wharton and he can take it to the house on any given play, but I don't think Wharton can win with just him IMO. Bulldogs have an outstanding passing game and can run the ball from time to time with a RB-by-committee approach. Of course I'm a "homer", so I say the 'Dogs win this one by a couple TDs. My actual scored prediction will come on Thursday. GO BULLDOGS!

But we're Goliad boys that played against Cuero and Yoakum in our day. It should be fun and bring back some memories. He played one corner and I played the other. We are a year and 3 days apart. Yoakum will win this game. Wharton without their big play maker Grissom is not the same team that won against Sealy. Wharton's defense is porous and their d line is big but not well conditioned. Wharton may hang close for three quarters but will run out of steam in the second half. Look for the Bulldogs to put the game away in the 4th quarter to win handily.

If yall think that Wharton is just going to lay over, die and give this game to Yoakum- yall are mistaken. While they are not the same team without Grissom. Coach Finn has done a great job. If Grissom was 100 percent in the El Campo game-they could have beaten the Ricebirds. The Tigers will show up and give Yoakum all they can handle

I don't play, so how and why would I take a team lightly. Good coach or not, I think Yoakum will have the best athletes on the field who play more disciplined football IMO. The Bulldogs respect all opponents. I know LB #4 for Wharton is a stud and Pinkney is a threat to take it to the house on any given play. Good luck to ALL District 26-3A teams.

Who said Wharton was going to lay over and die? I wouldn't expect any team in the playoffs to roll over and die. As a matter of fact, I think Wharton will be the favorite in this game.

Great regal. My wife had surgery yesterday, to reverse all the procedures from her ruptured bowel back in Feb, in which she stayed nearly 90 days in the hospital. Report, surgery went well, (about 6 hours in duration) no more "bag" for her as she calls it, and doctor said her insides looks real healthy compared to when she was so sick from her crohns earlier in the year. He was able to see all healthy tissue to re-attach and do the reversal. Thank you GOD.

So, "if" she continues to progress well, I can see my son's first playoff game. Missy (wife) brought her Bulldog jersey and will wear it here at Seton in Austin on Saturday, and listen to it on the radio. Knowing her, she'll have the bell's chiming too, for all to hear in the hallway.

I hope you get to see Bro. Richard. Have him point me out (if I attend) down on the sideline keeping stat's/sideline photos for the paper, and make sure we say hi to one another.

Different systems now of course. But, we love being visitors this year for some odd reason.

Headed into the final week of the regular season, neither Yoakum nor Wharton knew they’d be playing in the postseason. With help from the fellow district opponents, each school punched its ticket to the post season.

Wharton (7-3, 4-2) was off the final week of the regular season and needed Bellville to defeat Sealy, which it did, to avoid a three-way tie the Tigers would have lost. The tiebreaker would’ve come down to points scored. Wharton has just 187 points this season while Sealy has 204.

“We were practicing and didn’t even know if we’d play another game,” Wharton head coach Tim Finn said.

Yoakum (6-4, 3-2) needed a victory against Giddings and some help from Smithville in the form of a victory against Gonzales. The Bulldogs got exactly what they needed, but didn’t know their fate until roughly eight minutes after their 35-14 win over Giddings.

“One of the parents was giving us updates from the stands of the Gonzales game,” Yoakum head coach Brent Kornegay said.

With their playoff match set, both Finn and Kornegay turned their attention to each other’s team. Wharton and Yoakum square off in the first round of the 3A playoffs Saturday at 7 p.m. at Victoria Memorial Stadium.

Wharton is no stranger to the playoffs having made it to the post season in each of the past two seasons, including a trip to the regional round in 2011.

“Experience is one of the best teachers,” Finn said. “We have only nine guys back from that team, but we have a very solid nucleus and those guys have stepped. They know the effort it takes to be successful.”

Yoakum, on the other hand, has missed the playoffs the past two seasons. That hasn’t stopped the Bulldogs though from being confident headed into Saturday’s match up.

“We’re ready to go,” Kornegay said. “We’re ready to play right now.”

Both defenses face a unique situation in preparing for the opposition’s quarterback.

Yoakum uses a dual-quarterback threat with junior Chase Hermes and Tre’vontae Hights. Hermes is the classic, drop back and uses his arm to make plays. Hights is no slouch when it comes to passing, but his biggest threat is his running ability. The sophomore leads the Bulldogs in rushing with 457 yards and seven touchdowns.

“It’s a two-headed monster,” Finn said about Yoakum’s pair of signal callers.

Yoakum’s defense also has two quarterbacks to prepare for, but not for the same reason as Wharton. The tigers have been without their starting quarterback, Bartee Grissom, since the team’s 17-10 loss to El Campo.

“His return is questionable this week,” Finn said Wednesday afternoon.

Grissom tallied 1,306 yards and 15 touchdowns while throwing just four interceptions before injuring his ankle. Sophomore Chris Green has been under center in his absence, completing 15 of 27 passes for 308 yards and three touchdowns with four interceptions.

“We’re anticipating their regular starting quarterback to play,” Kornegay said. “He’s a great athlete and a concern for us if he does play.”

No matter who lines up at quarterback for Wharton, they’ll have one of the top backs from district 25-3A in the backfield with them. Senior Alfred Pinkney finished just six yards short of 1,000 yards rushing with 11 touchdowns. Kornegay said stopping Pinkney will be the key for the Bulldogs defense.

“We have to stop Pinkney,” he said. “And make our tackles at first contact and not let him gain extra yards.”

While there are plenty of key factors in the bi-district playoff game Saturday night, it all comes back to the basics for both Finn and Kornegay.

“Anytime you’re in the playoffs turnovers play a major role,” Finn said. “We don’t want to give them any more opportunities than we have to.”

“It’s a good match up and will come down to who takes care of the ball and who wins the special teams battle,” Kornegay said. “We have to make them earn everything they get.”

Yeah, 3 tipped passes went for interceptions against Yoakum tonite. The Bulldogs had a pretty good offense, but the Wharton offensive backfield and wide-out speed was too much on the corners for Yoakum tonite. The qb for Wharton Marquiz Grissom was very accurate and efficient in the passing game, finding open areas to deliver his passes to the speedy wide-outs. Just about every pass was right on the money. Yoakum played a valiant comeback game in the 2nd half, but a couple of untimely tipped balls lead to interceptions that made the difference. Good season for the Bulldogs as a good Wharton team earns their way to the next round.

Very classy move by Yoakum players to go over and pay respect to the WHS school song after the game. I don't see that happen very often.

There is no doubt Wharton is a completely different team with their QB back, If he stays healthy Wharton has a shot at making a deep run. Congrats to Wharton.

They must have flipped home and home because NB Canyon is about 12 miles from our school. In fact our district backs up about 1 mile away from them. On football nights you can see the lights from our stadium.

Yes, must congratulate the Wharton Tigers on their victory. Wish them well as they move on.

As I had mentioned on a prior post before the game. Protect the ball and contain the corner. Didn't happen tonight. Still made a game out of it though.

Congrats to the Bulldogs and thank you son and nephew for giving me a thrill of a life time the past 2 years. Hey, we did what said couldn't be done, make the playoff's this year and we are dern proud of you. Keep heads high, move on to next level of life guys.

Once again, good luck to Wharton in the playoffs.

I told someone prior to the game that if we didn't turn the ball over and played defense better than normal, we would win. Well neither happened and we (The 'Dogs) lost to a pretty darn good Wharton team. I too think that without Grissom at the helm, we would have won the game. IMO, he was the difference maker, going 20-of-25 for 259 yards. There were a total of 10 turnovers in the game. Yoakum threw 4 picks and fumbled twice while Wharton tossed 3 picks and fumbled once. Wharton took an unheard of 88 offensive snaps in this game while Yoakum had 48 offensive snaps. Wharton finished with almost 500 yards of offense while Yoakum tallied 350 yards. The Tigers were flagged 11 times for 115 yards and that somewhat helped keep us in the game. Yoakum also had over 200 kickoff return yardage which shortened up the field for us somewhat. Yoakum got down 28-0 and could have easily quit, but these 'Dogs are not quitters and made a game of it. Hate to lose, but I'm proud of this Bulldog team. Coaches also did a great job this season and I know my son will take a lot from his years as a Bulldog football player. Not many players will be able to say they beat Cuero twice on the varsity level and made the playoffs. Sad to see the season end so soon, but it is what it is. Love my 'Dogs!

Yes, got to watch a little of Wharton with their QB against Sealy and felt Yoakum would not matchup well against him, with all the turnover and penalties a pretty sloopy game. Wharton and Bellville may very well meet again, if Wharton QB is still healthy may be a different outcome next time. La Grange and Yoakum just to big a hole to come back from, all part of the game.
