The Wharton Tigers will become Bellville Brahma fans this week as they await their fate in the Class 3A state playoffs.
But wait — it gets a little more complicated than that in District 25-3A, but not nearly as complicated as the possibilities for District 26-3A.
In District 13 2A Division II, the three playoff representatives — including East Bernard — have been decided.
Only two East Wharton County games are on tap for the final week of the regular season. East Bernard is at Danbury, while Boling finishes the year at Tidehaven. The Tigers have an open date.
Here’s how things look in the final week of regular season action:
Wharton, open date
While Tim Finn is in his first year of coaching the Tigers, he’s been a longtime high school football coach, and this is the first time his team has had a bye week in the final week of the regular season.
That was just the way the schedule was drawn up, and now the Tigers are waiting to see if they will make the 2012 state playoffs.
El Campo (5-0, 9-0) has clinched a playoff spot and will advance to the Class 3A Division I state playoffs next week.
The second and third place positions in District 25-3A are up for grabs between Bellville (4-1, 6-3), Wharton (4-2, 7-3) and Sealy (3-2, 6-3).
So it all boils down to the Bellville-Sealy game, which will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sealy.
Here’s a look at the different possibilities:
• If Bellville wins, the Brahmas finish in second place with a 5-1 record. That would leave Wharton and Sealy tied for third place with 4-2 records, and Wharton advances to the playoffs because of a 36-35 win over Sealy.
• If Sealy wins by 8 or less points, Bellville would win the three-way tiebreaker and advance as the second place team. Wharton would then take the third place position because of the Tigers’ win over Sealy.
• If Sealy wins by 9 or more points, it advances as the district’s second place team. Bellville would get the third place position because of its 30-0 win over Wharton.
“It’s crazy, but that’s what it is,” Finn said. “You have to have a solution for the ties. We’re better off third than tied for second.”
In District 26-3A, which will provide the bi-district opponents for District 25-3A, there are even more possibilities. One thing is for sure — La Grange has clinched a playoff spot, and the Leopards could very well be the opponent for the Tigers if Wharton advances.
Meanwhile, the Tigers continue to work out this week with preparations focused on La Grange. If the Tigers make the playoffs and end up playing someone else, they will still have a week to prepare for the other team, Finn said.
The Tigers got back on the winning track last week with a solid 56-0 win over the Royal Falcons.
“We had a pretty complete football game,” Finn said. “It was good to get on the board early. That was a key to the football game. The defense played pretty well.”
Finn said sophomore quarterback Chris Green, filling in for injured senior Bartee Grissom, had a better outing in his second start for Grissom.
“He was better prepared and more comfortable, and the kids were more comfortable with Chris,” Finn said.
Finn praised the play of running backs Alfred Pinkney (224 yards rushing on 24 carries) and Dontre Elliott (125 yards, 14 carries).
“The O-line did a great job of blocking,” Finn said. “They (Pinkney and Elliott) did a nice job of turning some short gains into long gains.”
While it’s unusual to finish your regular season with an open date and not know if you will even be in the playoffs or not, Finn said the Tigers are handling the situation well.
