Two men from Wharton County will be honored next week by the University of Houston as members of the 1976 Cougar football team, which will be inducted into the university’s Hall of Honor.

Joining the team into the Hall of Honor are Earl Chumchal from East Bernard and Paul Humphreys from El Campo.

Humphreys, a senior linebacker who was an all-Southwest Conference player that year, led the team with 81 tackles and had one interception.

Chumchal was a sophomore cornerback for the 1976 Cougars.

The Cougars were SWC co-champions in 1976, their first year of eligibility in the conference. They represented the conference in the 1977 Cotton Bowl and defeated No. 4-ranked Maryland, 30-21.

Houston finished the season with a No. 4 national ranking, the highest in the school’s history.

The team, as well as six individuals, will be inducted into the Hall of Honor during a dinner celebration on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Bayou Event Center, 9401 Knight Road in Houston.

Those interested in purchasing tickets to the black tie dinner should call the Cougar Pride office at 713-743-4684.

Also being inducted into the 19th class are Jacky Cupit, golf; Paul Gipson, football; Rose Magers-Powell, volleyball; Brad Sullivan, baseball; Don Todd, football coach; and Jackie Washington, track and field.
