From The Facts...

’Necks crush KIPP
Columbia will play for district title next week at La Marque.

By ANTHONY MAENZA | Posted: Saturday, October 27, 2012 1:11 am
WEST COLUMBIA — Taking care of business was easy for the Columbia Roughnecks as they clinched a spot in the playoffs after thrashing KIPP Sunnyside 54-5 Friday night.
The victory kept Columbia perfect in District 24-3A play (3-0, 7-2 overall) as the ’Necks get ready to battle La Marque next week for the district title.
“The kids practiced well all week getting ready for this game,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “Offense played pretty well and the defense was excellent. We still had a couple of mistakes we need to clean up.”

Columbia compiled 550 yards of offense in the contest, with 475 yards coming on the ground. The Roughnecks had 411 yards by the half.

Running backs Floyd Bess and Broderick Thomas earned the bulk of the rushing yards for Columbia. Bess had 170 yards on only 10 carries and four touchdowns while Thomas had 118 on only four carries and one touchdown.

The Roughnecks defense continued to play well as it allowed only 58 yards of offense and collected three turnovers.

It didn’t look like the Roughnecks were going to need much time to score against the Senators. Four scoring drives in the first half took only one play.

That included the first play of the game when Bess took off on a 55-yard touchdown run with 11:35 left in the first quarter to put Columbia up 6-0.

Sunnyside cut the lead to 6-3 after a muffed punt put the Senators in position to kick a field goal with 6:12 left in the first quarter.

LaMarquis Fields scored on the first play of Columbia’s next possession when he scampered 69 yards into the end zone on a reverse play. The two-point conversion was good to put Columbia up 14-3.

Bess scored again with 2:43 left in the opening period when he capped an 84-yard drive with a 33-yard touchdown run to help put Columbia up 21-3.

On the first play of the second quarter, Thomas broke through the Senator defense on an 85-yard touchdown run with 11:46 left in the period.

After a 1-yard punt put the ball on the Sunnyside 24, Bess capped the short drive with his third touchdown run of the night from 7 yards out with 8:50 left in the first half.

Columbia’s passing game got into the scoring act when Sam Clinch caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Willis Johnson with 5:42 left in the opening half to help put Columbia up 40-3 at the half.

Bess scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 3:01 left in the third quarter on a 17-yard run to cap a 65-yard drive that put Columbia up 47-3.

After Sunnyside recorded a safety following an interception by Columbia’s David Rodriguez in the fourth quarter, Columbia capped the scoring later in the period.

Following a fumble recovery by Phillip Martinez at the Sunnyside 48, the ’Necks marched down the field again. Marquise Myles finished the drive when he caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Darius Bell with 5:41 left in the game.

I would like to express some envy towards the Sunnyside players and coaches. From what i hear, they don't have hardly any seniors or maybe none on that team. Those boys played their heart out and showed great sportsmanship from start to finish and that's also a good reflection of the coaches as well. One would expect after getting whipped up on all season, for emotions to take over and altercations to start but, there wasn't one time that i seen that those boys didn't just get up, dust themselves off and go back to playing ball. They may not have played ball very well but they can teach a few teams how to conduct themselves on the field and how to keep fighting when you're getting your tail whipped. Only thing i didn't understand about them is the lack of parents in their stands. I can understand not having a lot of fans from the community being a new team and not being very good but, a parent not showing up to support their kids is just awful to me. There might have been twenty to thirty people total in those stands. Shame on some parents. Anyways, i wish Sunnyside good luck in the future.
