I think this will be a toss up in this bi Brazoria County Rivalry. I'll go with Sweeny who has won two games in a row after losing to Hempstead

I heard the O-Line coach from Sweeny and the DC from Columbia were going to have a wrestle off in the Sumo suits if it goes to overtime. If that's the case, I take Sweeny in OT!!!

Should be a great game, as I hear Sweeny may be getting some key kids back healthy!

Good luck to both teams, but I have to say it "GATA Dogs!!!"

In that case, GATA must stand for Give Another Touchdown Away. Seriously though, may both teams play each other hard as hell and all go home healthy. Call it homerism but I can't see Sweeny winning this one unless we have another night like we did in hempstead.

From The Facts...

Sweeny, Columbia meet once again with playoff hopes in the balance.

By ALEX YBARRA | Posted: Thursday, October 18, 2012 2:00 am
SWEENY — Columbia coach Randy Lynch doesn’t believe the rivalry with Sweeny ever gets old.
There are plenty who probably agree with him. After all, how could it? Especially when district title ramifications, playoff berths and bragging rights are always at stake.
“Every school goes through it, whether it’s Angleton, Brazoswood, Bay City and El Campo,” he said. “There’s those rivalries that are always there. It’s good for high school football.”

The last two meetings between Sweeny and Columbia have come late in the season, Week 9, but this one is a bit earlier. Yet that doesn’t make it any less important when they meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

Columbia (1-0 in District 24-3A, 5-2 overall) and Sweeny (0-1, 1-5) are battling for playoff positioning with district newcomer La Marque (1-0, 5-1).

“It’s a big ball game for both teams and a win for either team puts them one step closer to making the playoffs, along with the pride and everything else that goes with it,” Lynch said.

Columbia has strung together two victories since a tough loss to Hempstead in which the Roughnecks committed eight turnovers. But that game seems like a distant memory these days.

The ’Necks routed Bay City (48-0) then Stafford (45-21) while getting back to the run game in the process. They’ve rushed for 1,986 yards, which leads the district, behind Floyd Bess (118 carries, 903 yards, eight TDs) and Broderick Thomas (91 carries, 513 yards, 10 TDs).

“The biggest thing for us right now is playing consistently for four quarters,” Lynch said. “That’s the biggest concern for us.”

Against Stafford, Columbia jumped out to a 35-14 lead in the first half before letting up a little in the second, Lynch said.

“We made a few mental mistakes in the second half,” he said. “We just gotta be able to overcome those things and put together four good quarters.”

Sweeny might have only one win in six weeks, but that’s not taking anything away from what Lynch thinks of coach Brett Sawyer and his Bulldogs.

“I know what Sweeny’s record is but they’re a lot better than what their record shows,” he said. “They got a good defensive front. They’re strong. They’re physical.”

Sweeny has lost five straight since beating Bay City 48-15 to start the season, but they haven’t been blowouts. Losses to Brazosport, Bellville and Edna during that stretch were by a combined nine points.

“We’ve lost some games but we’ve been competitive in every game and our kids are really playing hard and well,” Sawyer said. “I’ve been telling them all year, there’s something special that’s gonna happen to this group of people, and I hope it starts this week.”
“It’s my third season and they’re hard-nosed group of kids,” Sawyer said. “They’re fast and competitive. They play with a lot of pride.”

Looks like sour grapes is on the menu after that loss. How bout a genuine congratulations after receiving a good ole country ass whippin. We certainly tipped our hats when you guys took us out in the standaround game last year. Anyways, don't be so sure about this seasons matchup in standaround. I hear that Junior lefty has Sweeny's number and if the roughnecks can find a way to hit the ball in that game, you may just be eating those grapes again.

BARELY A BATTLE: Columbia dominates Sweeny 43-3 in rivalry.

By ANTHONY MAENZA | Posted: Saturday, October 20, 2012 2:00 am
SWEENY — Columbia turned a close game into a blowout in a matter of a quarter Friday night as the Roughnecks rolled to a 43-3 District 24-3A win over cross-county rival Sweeny.
The Roughnecks (6-2, 2-0) held a 10-3 lead at the half, but scored 30 unanswered points in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Columbia running back Floyd Bess, who had 103 yards rushing, had two touchdown runs and Jarius Kesee caught two touchdown passes from Willis Johnson in the period.

The Roughneck defense limited Sweeny (1-6, 0-2) to just 94 yards of offense, including just 16 yards of offense in the second half.

The second half started with LaMarquis Fields returning the kickoff for a touchdown for the Roughnecks, but it was called back because of a penalty.

But 26 seconds later, Kesee scored his first touchdown on a 40-yard pass from Johnson with 11:18 left in the third.

On Columbia’s next possession, Kesee latched onto a 21-yard touchdown pass from Johnson with 7:11 left in the third. Jerry Wayne Cotten caught the two-point conversion pass from Broderick Thomas to put Columbia up 25-3.

After the Bulldogs couldn’t convert on a fourth-down play at their own 33, it didn’t take long for the Roughnecks to score again. This time Bess capped the short drive with a 6-yard touchdown run with 2:47 left in the third. A two-point conversion run by Thomas put Columbia up 33-3.

Johnson pulled in an interception on Sweeny’s next possession and returned it to the Bulldog 15. One play later, Bess scored his second touchdown with 55 seconds left in the third quarter. Cassie Dittrich kicked her second extra point of the season after the Bess score to put Columbia up 40-3.

Jacob Comer kicked a 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Columbia’s final points of the game.

It looked like the contest was going to be the typical close rivalry game in the first half.
