Members of the St. Joseph High School girls volleyball team were injured Saturday morning when the school bus they were traveling in to a game in Austin crashed in Gonzales County.

Preliminary reports from the Department of Public Safety indicate that none of the 32 passengers, mostly young athletes, suffered any life-threatening or critical injuries.

Trooper Chad Fritz of the DPS, said the crash occurred just after 8 a.m. just north of the DeWitt County line on U.S. Highway 183, near Farm-to-Market Road 2065.

The northbound school bus veered to the right of the highway and struck a sign, Fritz said. The driver then overcorrected into the southbound lane, where a tractor-trailer was approaching. The bus driver then overcorrected again and veered right. The bus then went into a ditch and rolled at least once, the trooper said.

Several passengers, who suffered mostly cuts and bruises, were taken to hospitals in Cuero, Gonzales and Yoakum. The driver's identity was not immediately available.

Fritz said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
