Will be one of the best one in years-I don think Wharton has won since 2000-when coach Mike Rice was in El Campo-Gillis has never lost to the Tigers even during his first tenure

Will go with the Ricebirds. Tigers need to play with emotion

Grissom is a good QB for Tigers but needs to get rid of ball sooner . He did have a lot of time but was sacked against Columbus-He did have two sensational throw and catches in the first quarter.

Tigers also need to play better on pass defense. Brandl is good QB for Birds even though he didn't throw much against Royal.

Wharton also needs to establish a running game.
I'll still take the Ricebirds by two TDs
Some years are missing from this site.

I've been to at least 25 of these games

El Campo by 7.

Wharton is good, but I think EC is the best team in reg 4. Wouldn't surprise me if the tigers pulled it out though

not that i'm a big ricebird supporter or a tiger hater....but..

i'm a huge fan of coach gillis and his style of football.

so...in a battle of styles...i see el campo muscling wharton....

i will add this...coachgillis needs to have his secondary practice open field tackling....one miss, and wharton's guys are gone...

Gillis won't break his Wharton winning streak this year. El Campo has beaten up on bad Wharton teams and good Wharton teams in the past. El Campo has mentally blocked put the time between the two Gillis eras!

I think that Wharton is better than most years...still won't matter. EC by a conservative 28. Should be a packed house.

I'll take El Campo by 2 or 3 tds, Wharton's run defense isn't very good and against El Campo that's the last thing you want.

Doubt EC will beat Wharton by more than 1-2 touchdowns. This rivalry is not what it used to be like in the 1980s and earlier. El Campo doesn't seem to take it as the River Battle and Gillis just considers it as a district game that they win. Wharton on the other hand considers it a big rivalry.
The Ricebirds have dominated the series mainly because they have more players out for football than Wharton.

Spanish Camp

Sorry, Scoop. You're off base on why El Campo wins. Wharton generally has more speed and talent on the field than El Campo year in an year out. Not the case this year.

The reason El Campo dominates the rivalry is because of the football program that is established in El Campo. That's also the reason El Campo was a force in 4a, despite being one of the smallest schools in the classification. El Campo wins year-in and year-out with kids that couldn't step on the field for most schools.

That being said, I think both teams are better that their average teams.

Birds win by at least 3 TDs, probably 4.

Scoop27

The key for Wharton will be to run the ball. Columbus stopped the run last week. Grissom will throw the ball I bet 30 plus times. Wharton's receivers are some of the best in the district.

Wharton's defense has given up a lot of points and have been unable to stop the run or passing which was evident against Columbus who had more yards than the Tigers.

I never expected the Tigers to succeed and win as much as they have with new coach Tim Finn. Brad Wright also helped the Tigers win two games in the playoffs last year.

Before that, Wharton didn't have anything.
. W har
I can't see El Campo winning by 4 TDs unless the Tiger turn the ball over a lot. This could be a high scoring affair. This will be the Ricebirds toughest offense opposition this season

I think EC is gonna win, but I just don't see a 4 TD spread. Wharton is a pretty good team.

Got it.

I have some Wharton and El Campo Trivia for you or who ever can answer it, you have to answer both though.

First came the Tank and then Came Papa, Who were these fellas? and what high school did each play for? Hint, both played college ball, 1 went pro and the other used to wear a dew-rag under his helmet.

I am going to go with the underdogs in this one. Hoping they can somehow, someway pull out a victory. It has been a long time since Wharton has had a season like this...would be great if it continued

Anthony Ray

And thats the second half, our coaches had a bounty on Ray, he was known as Papa, anyone who could get his dew rag got a steak dinner......

Ray was at Wharton during my early years of playing at Brazosport HS. He was impressive.

Sherman was a senior at El Campo when I was playing 8th grade football at Freeport Intermeditate. One of the most memorable varsity game I watched as a kid was El Campo vs Brazosport. My 8th Grade year, I had a love for playing and watching football, and couldnt wait to play under the lights back then.

Which poses another trivia question, Brazosport had a Running back the same calibure as Sherman and Ray during the same time: Who was he?

Hints:.... Nickname "Big Jess" and he played for TCU.......?

Yeah, I can remember it was I believe the 1984 season, a run by Sherman at Hopper field.... He ran over Tim Williams-RIP (Texas Tech), broke what looked like 20 tackles and then hurdled Dback Raymond Greer- RIP and took it to the house..... That was a good game, #3 -"Big Jess" for Bport got more yards than Sherman that night, However, EC won 27-19.

Brazosport went on to play Tomball in the play offs and lost in the fist round 28-21 when Bubba Greeley scored on a late run for Tomball....

Just realized that the first and last guy that Sherman made contact with on that run have passed away. Tim Williams was a hell of a guy, alot of us youngsters looked up to him, he would still work out at the field house when he was in town after graduation. , He was a beast, could bench press 420 pounds in Highschool.... and over 500 when in college.

Raymond was a heck of an athlete as well, very likable disposition as well....

Yeah, there was some good games in that old 4A district. Most of the teams have dropped to 3A, except for Bport and Bay City.

Friendswood, Santa Fe, and Calhoun seemed to get moved in and out of that district,

The Main ones were:
Bay City
Wharton
El Campo
Brazosport
Columbia

Those were some good old football rivals there.

Grissom has played well. Hasn't been a huge factor.

Difference in the first half was giving Wharton the ball on the EC 35 twice. EC didn't have the ball much in the first half.
