7-on-7 State Championship Tournament Will Return to B/CS in 2014

COLLEGE STATION, TX -- The 7 on 7 State Championship Tournament has decided to return to Bryan-College Station in 2014.

Because of NCAA and SEC rules, after celebrating 15 years of hosting the tournament, 2012 was the last year the tournament could be held on the Texas A&M University’s campus. However, the Bryan-College Station Convention & Visitors Bureau (BCSCVB) submitted a bid proposal to the 7 on 7 state board to host them at Veteran’s Park.

Numerous cities took this opportunity to submit proposals as well. After several months, the state board decided to award the 2013 tournament to Round Rock and return to Bryan-College Station for the 2014 tournament.

“We understand this was a good opportunity for the state board to look at all of their options,” Kindra Fry, BCSCVB Director of Sales, said. “We are excited that they have enjoyed their time in Bryan-College Station so much in the past that they definitely want to come back in 2014 and possibly even after that. We look forward to continuing our partnership with them.”

Doug Stevens with the 7 on 7 state board said the board was grateful and fortunate to have partnered with the BCSCVB for such a great experience, and they are hopeful for a great future.

From this event, the BCSCVB estimates an economic impact of about $900,000 is generated for local hotels and businesses. The tournament brings in more than 400 local hotel rooms each night.

With as many as 128 teams featuring some of the top football recruits in the country participating in the tournament, the event attracts an estimated 15,000 spectators over the three days.

7 on 7 football is an off-season workout program that most Texas high schools use to improve the skills of quarterbacks, receivers, secondary players and linebackers. The game emphasizes passing using a 45-yard field and a one-hand touch for a tackle.

Every year schools throughout Texas organize teams and participate in summer league qualifiers that culminates with a state championship tournament in July right here in College Station.

To comply with UIL rules, active coaches are prohibited from instructing players during games. The fast-paced, high-scoring, offense-oriented competition is as exciting for the fans to watch as it is for the players and coaches who participate in the league.
