District play is finally here!

Folks in Big Spring must be pretty excited about young Tannehill and the way Big Spring has turned things around to this point. Going from 0-10 to 5-0 is definitely impressive.

To my knowledge, there are no posters from Big Spring on the board. Has anyone out there seen the Steers play this season?

Now where are our "Media Mayhem Masters"---Matt, G2, and Terry? You would think they would be handicapping this game. I think Big Spring may be pretty good but i don't think they can run with the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball for 4 quarters---Wylie by 14.

I don't think you can point to any team Big Spring has faced and consider them in the same area code as Wylie this season, IMO. I know Argyle would like another shot at the Bulldogs, but things would have to go great for us for that to happen. It sure could, though. This game is not necessarily out of Big Spring's capabilities to win, though. All they've done is win against everyone they've played. So you just can't go jumping to conclusions in this one. It will have to be proven on the field. I like Wylie in this one, but I am biased.

Anything less than 45 point win by WhyLie would embarrassing.Unlike some other teams... we don't blow people out by 45+. No need. Look over our history--Coach Sandifer will not embarrass other teams. If comfortably ahead--subs go in 3rd quarter...

Each to their own. You can't tell a kid to fall before the endzone though. If it's 45+ points and the team is working on other parts of their game, may take 60 to get the job done. It's the will to compete. ;)

There is no doubt that Big Spring is MUCH improved this year as compared to last year on both sides of the football. BUT, they haven't faced anyone yet even close to the caliber of Wylie. These two teams may be equal by record, but Wylie is MUCH better and has played a much tougher non district schedule than Big Spring.
Wylie- 35
B.Spring- 14

We all know Big Spring is better this year, but not enough talent to put up a fight against the Bulldogs.

7:30 P.M. TODAYHMEMORIAL STADIUM, BIG SPRINGHKEAN105.1 FM

What's riding on this game: This is both team's District 4-3A opener and both squads are unbeaten, so this is about as big a Week 6 matchup as you could hope for. The winner will give itself a leg up in the district title race. The loser will have some catching up to do over the final four weeks of the season.

Last week: Both teams were idle after picking up nondistrict wins on Sept. 28. Wylie rolled to a 40-18 homecoming win over Lubbock Estacado, while Big Spring earned a 29-19 home win over Seminole.

Scouting Big Spring: The Steers (0-10 a year ago) are in the midst of one of the area's biggest turnarounds, and the improvement they've shown in all phases has been striking. That's particularly true on offense, where Big Spring has raised its scoring average from 8.2 points per game in 2011 to 33.6 this season. Sophomore quarterback Tobyn Tannehill (940 yards, nine touchdowns passing; 538 yards, six TDs rushing) has been the main catalyst for the Steers, who have also gotten nice seasons from tailback Michael Oliva (108-626, seven TDs) and receiver Devin Roberson (23-412, two TDs). Max Papajohn has been the leader for the Big Spring defense, which enters today surrendering 11.8 points per contest.

Bulldogs update: The 18 points Wylie allowed to Lubbock Estacado was the most the Bulldogs have surrendered all season, but that number is a bit misleading. Wylie led that game 40-6 before the Matadors scored a pair of late touchdowns against backups. By any objective measure, the Bulldogs defense has been nothing short of stellar this year, allowing 156.8 yards and 10.6 points per game. And they've been equally successful against he pass and run. Opponents have run for just 400 yards and 2.9 yards per carry and have only thrown for 384 with one touchdown against seven interceptions.

What Bulldogs need to do to win: Contain Tannehill. Big Spring's sophomore standout isn't the Steers' only weapon, but he's the guy that makes that offense go. A true dual threat QB, he has the ability to beat defenses with his arm and legs, so the Bulldogs will have to make sure they account for both.

Daniel Youngblood's prediction: Wylie 35, Big Spring 17.

What kind of stadium does Big Spring have and what kind of turnout is expected in this one? I suspect Wylie will travel with the full entourage for this one, huh. And you can guess that the homeside will be filled with the Steer faithful. Probably the biggest game of the season for both clubs so far, and the biggest game played in Big Spring in years.

Driving west of here is not one of my favorite things. It's a little over 100 miles to Big Spring but I swear it feels like 200. Midland (Greenwood) feels like 250 and thank goodness Monahans comes here this year because that place is way out of the edge of the earth!!!!:ack!:

Their stadium seats plenty...around 7-8000 I think.

They refurbished their stadium this year (it needed it... ). New Field Turf, new locker rooms, and I think new seats. Was told it is nice--will find out in about 3 hrs!

Would agree with Franz. Lots of no calls on late hits and blatant facemasks. One of the poorest officiated games I have seen in a long, long time.

What a game! We never lost control, but you got the feeling Big Spring was always a threat to make a comeback. Lots of hard hitting including a few cheap ones (far west Texas refs didn't get the UIL player safety memo apparently)...but mostly got the impression that Tannehill is going to be a threat to our district for the next two seasons. This was the first true passing attack we have faced, but we were the first real defense they have faced...we won the battle with 3 picks including the first pass he made.

Big Spring will go from dead last to probably second place in our district, but they might have problems in the playoffs with refs from other parts of the state..they have to get a handle on the cheap shots and trash talking before taking on region 1 teams further to the east.

Agree x 100%. The refs didn't really make many bad calls--they just didn't make calls. Their FIRST responsibility is to PROTECT the players--they DID NOT do that... and lost control of the game. If not for the constant efforts of our coaching staff to keep our kids from responding and to just play ball, this one could have gotten REALLY ugly. Way to go Bulldogs--way to keep your cool... and go to 6-0 and more importantly 1-0 in district!
