What is the deal with all of the rule changes?? Kicking team cannot advance ball on a muffed punt or recovered onside kick. Why? What's wrong with that? They're taking away from the game. And apparently the receiving team can call a fair catch on an onside kick now? What is going on?!?!?!

The fair catch thing is from the WVU/Texas game. Saw it on the screen at the end.

I am pretty sure that it isn't a rule change. I think it has always been a rule that a muffed punt can't be advanced. Also an onside kick couldn't be advanced. Not sure what rule change you are speaking of.

On those high-bounce onside kicks, the receiving team can now call for a fair catch after the first bounce.

The kicking team cannot advance a muff punt or KO or onside kick recovered. Those are not new rules. Been that way for a long time. New this year, is the receiving team on a onside kick, can fair catch a one bounced kick, that is driven into the ground, to cause that high bounce. Not sure why the coaches wanted this new rule. I guess it has to be a safety issue. Some major collisions trying to recover them onside kickoffs, where the kick is driven into the ground, and that high bounce occurs.

Even if they have been rules in the past...why? Why cant a muffed punt be advanced?

Because the punt wasn't possessed. It's still classified as a punt, until it's possessed. And, it can be advanced, by the receiving team only though.

At the State meeting Roger Redding said that the reason was it was difficult to asses if the ball was kicked up or touched the ground first and then went up so they made it be either way. Now when the kick is driven into the ground the reciebing team can still call for a fair catch. To help with those types of injuries im sure!
