The Roughneck, after the big win over Bay City, should win handily over Stafford in their district opener

This will be the second confidence building game for WC before the meat of district play begins for them.

Wouldn't exactly call it a big win over bay city. The Rouchnecks second string "O" went in at the first of the fourth quarter and continued to move the ball at will. Hardly a test but a win we definately needed after the performance in Hempstead. We definately looked better, held on to the ball and had very few penalties which is something we've been having trouble with. Keep it up Necks!

Game capsule from The Facts...

Stafford (3-3) at Columbia (4-2)
7:30 p.m., Griggs Field
Last Meeting: Columbia 38-0 (2011)

Overview: Columbia got back to its winning ways with a 48-0 drubbing against Bay City, moving the Roughnecks to 4-1 overall. More importantly for Columbia, it erased memories of an eight-turnover performance that led to a thumping by Hempstead. Against Bay City, the ’Necks pounded the football for 376 yards on the ground behind Willis Johnson, Floyd Bess and Broderick Thomas.

Bess is second in the district with 749 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. In eight previous meetings, the Roughnecks have never lost to the Spartans.

The Roughnecks are heavy favorites in the District 24-3A opener against Stafford, which is coming off a 24-14 loss to Palacios after beating KIPP Academy 41-7. Running back Adrian Seales leads Stafford with 879 yards and 10 touchdowns on 112 carries, tops in the district. Bryston Braziel also has 246 rushing yards, and Easy Anyama has added 146.

Of Stafford’s total 1,752 yards, only 125 are through the air.

OMG... Our JV LOST? WtfJV is pretty much depleted with all of the injuries on Varsity. Even their best RB was moved up last week(#48 Jones) and had some quality carries against BC including a TD. They play hard though with what they have to work with.

Strong half propels ’Necks past Stafford

By ANTHONY MAENZA | Posted: Saturday, October 13, 2012 2:00 am
WEST COLUMBIA — First-half success turned into second-half doldrums for the Columbia Roughnecks, but they still were able to open District 24-3A play Friday night with a 45-21 victory over Stafford.
Columbia (5-2, 1-0) rolled up 278 yards in the first half on the ground as the ’Necks took a 35-14 lead into halftime.
After the half, Columbia struggled to get much going, mustering only 21 yards rushing in the second half. A safety by the defense and a 43-yard touchdown pass to David Rodriguez from Jarius Kesee in the fourth quarter put some space between them and the Spartans.

“You have to give the Stafford coaches credit. They did a great job of adjusting to what we were doing,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “We were able to make some big plays when we needed them. David made a great catch and Jarius made a big throw.”

Things got a little tight in the second half. Stafford recovered a muffed punt at the Columbia 8 with 8 minutes left in the third quarter, which led to a

1-yard touchdown run from Easy Anyama with 6:44 left in the third to cut the Columbia lead to 35-21.

Columbia didn’t really take back the momentum in the game until there was 6:05 left in the fourth quarter. After Columbia punter Coleman Roark pinned the Spartans back at at their own 1-yard line, Stafford quarterback Devin Batiste was called for intentional grounding in the end zone for a safety.

After a free kick gave the ball back to the ’Necks at the Stafford 45, Rodriguez latched onto the Kesee touchdown pass with 3:19 left in the game to put things away. Kesee went in at quarterback after Willis Johnson left the game with a leg cramp.

“I told them after the game that we still need to make sure we play for 48 minutes,” Lynch said.

It looked like it would be a runaway for Columbia in the first half. Broderick Thomas scored on touchdowns runs of 1 and 3 yards to help put Columbia up 14-0. Thomas’ first touchdown run came with 10:22 left in the first quarter. His second came with 4:56 left in the first.

After Stafford returned the ensuing kickoff after Thomas’ second score, Johnson capped a 59-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:20 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Thomas scored his third touchdown with a 12-yard run with 8:36 left in the second to put Columbia up 28-7. Thomas finished the game with 116 yards rushing.

After Devin Woodard intercepted a Stafford pass at the Roughneck 23, the ’Necks went on a 77-yard drive capped by a 14-yard Floyd Bess touchdown run. Bess finished the game with 149 yards rushing.

Columbia’s Cassie Dittrich became the first girl to score a point on the Columbia varsity football team when she kicked an extra point after Bess’ touchdown run.

Vance Andrews caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Adrian Seales with 33 seconds left in the first half to leave Stafford down 35-14 at the half.

While i do think we were on the predictable side, i believe we just didn't play with the same intensity coming back after the half. Like the paper said, we didn't get back in the groove till the latter part of the 4th. Coach lynch said it right, gotta play hard for the whole 48 minutes. That statement speaks volumes from pretty much here on out.
