About time they let Willis loose on the keepers, IMO he can run as good Daymond used too.

Offense is looking good. No turnovers, few penalties so far.

There is no doubt in my mind that Columbia will find the consistency by playoff time and will be a handful for whoever is unlucky enough to have to play them. Too many good athletes and too good of a coaching staff to take for granted.

There is no doubt Columbia has the athletes in the skill positions but its gonna come down the the O-line and D-line to continue to improve for us to have a chance in the playoffs. These kids are very well conditioned and physical they just need to continue improving on blocking up front and its look out for Columbia again. GATA NECKS

Columbia batters Bay City

By ANTHONY MAENZA | Posted: Saturday, October 6, 2012 2:00 am
BAY CITY — A week after turning the ball over eight times, Columbia coach Randy Lynch was looking for better from his Roughnecks.
He got it as the Roughnecks rolled over Bay City 48-0 Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
“We talked about playing a whole 48 minutes after last week,” Lynch said. “We came out and played a complete game: offense, defense and special teams.”

Columbia (4-2) pounded Bay City with its running attack as the Roughnecks finished with 376 yards on the ground. Running backs Broderick Thomas and Floyd Bess did the majority of the damage. Thomas had 113 yards rushing and two touchdowns while Bess had 104 and one touchdown. Thomas did most of his damage in the first half while Bess did his damage in the second.

Quarterback Willis Johnson added some passing yardage to the total as he completed 4-of-6 for 69 yards to go with 89 yards rushing.

“Willis did a good job of managing the game. He completed a pass to Jerry Wayne Cotten that was big on the first drive of the game,” Lynch said. “But our bread and butter is to run the football.”

Thomas had 101 yards at the half and put Columbia on the scoreboard first with 5:32 left in the first quarter. He capped a 70-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Johnson’s two-point conversion plunge put the ’Necks up 8-0.

The key play on the drive was a 30-yard pass from Johnson to Cotten to move Columbia deep into Bay City territory at Blackcat 26.

Johnson helped put the Roughnecks up 16-0 when he broke up the middle on a 20-yard touchdown run with 11:05 left in the first half. Dennis Moody caught a two-point conversion pass following the score.

Darius Bell had a 34-yard run that moved Columbia to midfield on the drive, which covered 84 yards.

Johnson worked his magic again on the next Roughneck drive.

He broke up the middle on a 48-yard touchdown run with 6:36 left in the first half.

The play capped a 66-yard drive.

Thomas scored his second touchdown of the half with 1:58 left in the second quarter on a 7-yard run. The play finished off a 54-yard drive. Thomas caught the two-point conversion pass to put Columbia up 31-0 at the half.

The ground attack continued in the second half.

After Thomas intercepted a Zavian Gartica pass at the Bay City 46, Bess capped the short drive with a 24-yard touchdown run with 9:52 left in the third quarter.

The play was set up by a 19-yard pass from Johnson to Cotten to the Bay City 24.

Columbia also had a chance to work on its kicking game. Jacob Comer kicked a 27-yard field goal with 3 minutes left in the third to put Columbia up 41-0.
It was all over but the shouting when Colton Jones, brought up from the Columbia JV, scored on a 3-yard run with 10:11 in the fourth.

The 14-yard scoring drive came after a Bay City player turned the ball over on a punt that was recovered by Columbia.

Dude, put that pipe down. You've already burned up some brain cells. lol Seriously though, I really like Johnson keeping the ball. Really think he'd do the spread option some justice for sure, if we ever decided to run that style of offense. But, i can't support ya on the idea that he is as good as Daymond running the ball. Daymond could change directions while carrying more speed. He was a good bit more elusive and from start to wide open was about three steps for him. Hell, in 2010 he single handidly went the whole length of the field against chapell hill towards the end of the game and they knew he was gonna keep it. Willis is stronger and a better passer but those are the only advantages i see over Daymond. I'd love to have Daymond in the backfield this year behind Willis.
