Will go with Hempstead at home-Bobcats lost big to 2A and 6th ranked East Bernard two weeks ago and then beat a weak Brazos team- Hempstead also beat a weak Royal team to open the season

Interesting game right here. As you stated, Hempstead got blown out by East Bernard a few weeks ago, and that really surprised me. They lost a ton of talent from last year, so there may be some ?'s there. Columbia also had a somewhat surprising loss to Wharton. I am interested to see how this game plays out.

WC's offense has been close to anemic while their defense has been crazy good.

I doubt Hempstead scores much, but unless WC's offense wakes up, the necks prolly won't put up more than 28.

They definitely have the players/coaches to be every bit as good as the last 2 years, they just haven't executed well enough yet. Lots of things to improve on still, especially the special teams. Smh

Columbia takes on Hempstead
By ALEX YBARRA | Posted: Thursday, September 27, 2012 2:00 am
WEST COLUMBIA — Hempstead might be a smaller school than Columbia, but it won’t be a pushover.
“I know they’re a 2A school, but dadgum they’re pretty good,” said Columbia coach Randy Lynch, whose Roughnecks play Hempstead at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bobcat Stadium (Donoho St. and 5th St., in Hempstead) for just their second road game of the nondistrict schedule. “Like I told the kids, ‘It’s basically a business trip for us. We need to go there, play well, and do what we have to do to win.”
The Bobcats, who went 14-0 before losing in the 2A state final last season, have wins against Brookshire Royal (50-14), Stafford (39-12) and Wallis Brazos (48-0), with their only loss to East Bernard (44-8).

“They’re very athletic,” Lynch said. “I know they played for a state championship last year, and they seemed to have just reloaded on both sides of the ball.”

Quarterback Will Smith calls the shots in Hempstead’s balanced offense, which has compiled 600 yards — 323 rushing and 277 passing. Smith has completed 62 percent of passes for 449 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.

Smith also leads the team with 34 carries for 358 yards and six touchdowns, but running back Desmond Jordan isn’t far behind. Jordan has 259 yards and five touchdowns on 36 carries.

Smith and Jordan will try to figure out a Columbia defense that had its best game of they season in an 18-7 win over Kashmere on Friday. The Roughnecks stifled the Rams for a measly 32 yards on offense.

“Our defense played extremely well last Friday night against Kashmere,” Lynch said.

Columbia (3-1) also ran for close to 270 yards, Lynch said, but added he’d like to see quarterbacks Willis Johnson and Darius Bell improve on scanning the field to find open receivers.

“I felt like we had some receivers working hard to get open, and don’t get me wrong, Kashmere is a really good defensive team,” Lynch said. “But our receivers did a good job of getting open. We just gotta make sure the quarterbacks can hit them.”

Johnson has completed 47 percent of passes for 163 yards, a touchdown and an interception, while Bell is at 43 percent, also with one score and a pick.

They look solid in practice, Lynch said, and they’re improving, but getting them to perform well consistently during a game is the next step.

“That’s one of the things we’ve been trying to work on for the past couple weeks,” Lynch said.

The running game hasn’t been an issue for Columbia, with Floyd Bess and Broderick Thomas continuously wearing out defensive fronts. Bess has 75 carries for 537 yards and five touchdowns, while Thomas has another 227 yards and four scores.

Johnson has chipped in with 135 yards and two touchdowns.

“We’re fixing to hit the midpoint of the season, and there’s definitely work to be done,” Lynch said. “Defensively, I thought we really stepped up and played really well. Then there’s things on special teams we’ve got to correct. All phases we try to improve on, whether it’s defense, offense or special teams.”
Columbia and Hempstead last met in 2005 with the Roughnecks riding to a 44-14 win.

Turnovers plague 'Necks in loss at Hempstead

From Facts staff reports | Posted: Saturday, September 29, 2012 2:00 am

HEMPSTEAD — Turnovers will hurt any team. And for the Columbia Roughnecks on Friday night, it was like a nail in the coffin.
With eight turnovers on the night the Roughnecks went down to Hempstead on the road, 32-17 to fall to 3-1 on the nondistrict season.
“We just had a slow start and our defense played well but the offense had multiple turnovers,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “We have a lot of work to do and we have to start taking care of our team. But turnovers killed us tonight.”

Trailing 12-2 at the half, it seemed like the Roughnecks were right back in it when Floyd Bess broke for a 43-yard touchdown run. But that didn’t last too long.

Hempstead Bobcat quarterback Will Smith came right back with a 60- plus scoring run to give them a 19-9 advantage. By the end of that third period Hempstead scored again and took a 26-9 lead into the final 12 minutes.

“Our defense basically kept us in the game in that first half,” Lynch added.

The deficit was too much for Columbia to overtake as the ’Necks kept coughing up the ball as they threw five interceptions and had five fumbles in 48 minutes of play.

“I told them we have one more nondistrict game against Bay City left and we have some work to do,” Lynch said.

The ’Necks had a safety in that first half for the only Columbia points.

Offensively, the Roughnecks did have 256 rushing yards but only five yards passing. Broderick Thomas had an 8-yard touchdown in the second half and a two-point conversion.

Defensively, the Roughnecks allowed 117 passing yards and 153 rushing yards.

Fields and Willis Johnson each had an interception in the loss.

Article says 'Necks fall to 3-1 in the pre-district schedule. Aren't they 3-2 having lost to Wharton as well? Shake it off Roughnecks you can start the second season fresh with a win over Bay City followed by a weak district foe Stafford. In a 5 team district with Stafford and Houston Sunnyside you're a lock to make the playoffs. Hempstead is no slouch. Hold onto the football and things will work out well for you.

Yeah, but watching the game, it seemed really one sided. Several dropped TD passes prevented them from having more. Bunch of penalties on us made it seem like we had less, but I guess we moved it decently... Just turned it over over penalized ourselves afterward

I don't understand the deep passes either. An average of 4 yrds per carry get you down the field and uses the clock. Short passing is what they need and let the receiver get what he can after that. With the lack of protection from the line, I would think the intended receiver would be on a short route and if there is a blown coverage deep then air it out. Gotta get some kind of passing game established to keep them from stacking the box and coming at us cause the o'line can't stay on the guy in front of them much less linebackers coming in on stunts. I think it's been a long time coming for us to run the spread option. We have excellent backs for it. Defense is doing a fine job and i think the all the backs are doing very well inspite of little or no blocking. They won't get far like they've been playing, plain and simple. A win over the blackcats means nothing. Too much talent on that team to look that horrible. Get it together necks!

I think if we can just take care of the football and quit getting negative yardage, the other things will get better with time and adjustments. I got faith that the "O" coaches have some answers and have a few good cards left in their hand.
