Roughnecks want better execution
By JOEL LUNA | Posted: Friday, September 21, 2012 2:00 am
WEST COLUMBIA — Four quarters of execution is what Columbia’s Randy Lynch will be looking for from his Columbia Roughnecks as they entertain Houston Kashmere on homecoming at 7:30 p.m. today at Griggs Field.
The Roughnecks (2-1) were stunned last week by Wharton (23-21), but now they are looking to get past the Rams (1-1), a team they’ve beaten three straight seasons.
“We played well in the first quarter on both sides of the ball, but then we had a letdown,” Lynch said. “This week we have been trying to stress execution on both sides of the ball, and so far it is looking good because we’ve had a good week of practice. Last week we had too many unnecessary penalties with offside and false starts, and it is those little itty-bitty errors that catch up with you. At times we found ourselves at first and 15 or first and 20.”
The loss also ended a 21-game regular season win streak, which means it is time to start another one for the ’Necks.
Houston Kashmere, which was idle last week, beat up on Houston Wheatley (28-0) two weeks ago after losing the opener to Huffman Hargrave (41-14). So far in two games the Rams are averaging 157.5 yards a game with John McKelvey leading them under center. He has 197 yards, 13 completions, a touchdown and four interceptions.
Albert Davis (22-116) leads the run game with a 5.27-per-carry average. Joshua Jacobs has six receptions for 99 yards and a score.
Last season, Columbia held on for a 34-26 win against the Rams after jumping out to a 26-0 first-half lead.
“The last two years have been very competitive, especially last season when we had that big lead,” Lynch said. “Just like Wharton, they do have good skill kids and run a spread offense. Last year Kashmere went two or three rounds deep in the playoffs.”
Senior Floyd Bess continues to lead the ground attack for the Roughnecks with 8.25 yards a carry. He’s scored five rushing touchdowns, with his longest play from scrimmage at 61 yards.
Broderick Thomas (25-134) and quarterback Willis Johnson (11-96) also will see carries.
Defensively, the ’Necks are holding opponents to an average of 223.3 yards a game. Devin Woodard has a couple of interceptions and Bess has another.
“Wharton had improved from the start of the season and their offensive line did well against us,” Lynch said. “They improved from week-to-week and are just two seconds from being 3-0. But it is like I tell our players, you have to show up and play every Friday.”
Other than bumps and bruises, the Roughnecks are pretty much injury-free going into today’s tilt.

I guess you were not watching the defense that close. The Necks only gave up 58 yards total offense and four first downs. On the other side of the ball, the Roughnecks racked up 21 first downs and 320 yards offense!

not bad for a 'weak' performance

not bad for a 'weak' performanceThis is true 75 and yet the win lacked something. I can only hope that coach Lynch is holding his real cards close to the vest and keeping it VERY vanilla at this juncture. Every play we seem to run with Bess is an attempt to cut back against the flow of the D. Wharton and now Kashmere were just waiting for it and honestly, I lost count of how many tackles their ILB's had. News flash fellas---the cutback is not ALWAYS there!! That said, you really must understand this about Kashmere. Even though they are an inner city school, the past two seasons I have witnessed that they are well disciplined on the field. The Rams had VERY few penalties in this game as well as last. Shocking....I know, but my son said after the game last season that they were one of the most respectful teams that we played all year! And oh yes our defense is to be commended again. Especially #4 Woodard who is playing some excellent pass coverage. GO NECKS!

Yeah, defense was great.

I was referring to weak offense, turnovers on downs. fumbles. etc

18 points isnt going to get it done against good teams, but the D played absolutely outstanding so that was really nice thing to see.

From The Facts...

Columbia barely gives an inch in 18-7 win

By ANTHONY MAENZA | Posted: Saturday, September 22, 2012 12:58 am
WEST COLUMBIA — In football, it is said offense gets the glory, but defense wins the game.
Columbia’s defense can have mounds of praise after its performance Friday night as the Roughnecks beat Kashmere 18-7 on homecoming night.
The Roughneck D limited the Rams to 32 yards of total offense. Subtract a 40-yard pass play that led to Kashmere’s score, and the Rams would have had negative yardage for the night.

“Except for the one long pass play, we shut them out most of the night,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “Offensively, we struggled a little bit. We’re just not in sync right now.”

The Roughnecks (3-1) couldn’t get much going on offense early.

“We played better in the second half, but a turnover and a bad penalty hurt us,” Lynch said. “We still need to work on our passing game. We had people open all night long, and we couldn’t get it to them. We just have to keep working on it.”

It was Kashmere that got on the scoreboard first. After a fumbled punt was recovered by Paul Banks, the Rams’ offense went to work.

Joshua Jacobs caught a 40-yard pass from Deyandre Moody at the Columbia 4 to set up the lone Kashmere score. A play later Jacobs caught a pass from Moody to help put Kashmere up 7-0 with 9:27 left in the first quarter.

Columbia’s defense didn’t allow much after that.

The Roughneck offense finally started to get things going in the second quarter. It marched downfield on an 80-yard drive that was capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass from Willis Johnson to Coleman Roark with 9:14 left in the first half.

Key play of the drive was a 26-yard pass from Johnson to tight end Jerry Wayne Cotten to the Kashmere 6 to set up the touchdown play. The extra point was missed and Columbia was down 7-6.

After the Columbia defense held on downs at its own 32, the Roughneck offense took over and got the lead.

Broderick Thomas, who rushed for 87 yards, scored the first of his two touchdowns with 2:38 left in the first half on a 1-yard plunge.

Johnson had a pair of 16-yard runs on the drive. He also completed a 10-yard pass to David Rodriguez. A personal foul on that play moved the ball to the Kashmere 17. A play later, Johnson broke loose on his second 16-yard run down to the Ram 1.

Columbia waited until the fourth quarter to put the capper on the win. Thomas scored his second touchdown on a 5-yard run with 4:30 left to cap a 50-yard drive.

Rushing: Columbia – Floyd Bess 22-95; Broderick Thomas 15-87; Willis Johnson 8-33. Kashmere – Albert Davis 2-10.

Passing: Columbia – Willis Johnson 5-9-0, 67 yards. Kashmere – Deyandre Moody – 4-10-0, 48 yards. John McKelvey 1-8-0, 4 yards.

Receiving: Columbia – Jerry Wayne Cotten 1-26; Broderick Thomas 1-26; David Rodriguez 1-10; Ryan Griggs 1-11, Coleman Roark 1-6. Kashmere – Joshua Jacobs 4-54.

Roughnecks did pretty well especially defense. Wow, held them to negative yardage. From my observation, watching specifically lineman on a lot of plays, our O'lineman cant stay on block long enough for the ball carrier to break the line of scrimmage a lot of times. I observed on a number of snaps that there stood 2 to 3 lineman with no one in front of them shortly after the ball was snapped. They were turned around or mabe got turned sideways but, they were facing to the side or the backfield and witnessing their running back getting smashed. Smh! Learn to stay on a block or learn to hold. We've got some of the best backs in the state and they are earning a lot of yards on shear skill and speed. Some key blocking in the middle would do wonders. Oh, and we need a kicker if anyone's looking for a job. Enjoyed the game and even though there's some kinks still present, the roughnecks should only get better on offense. As for the defense, they're right where they need to be.
