...for the Rangers to clinch the AL West? They have a 4 game lead with 14 games to play.

since they have 7 games still with the A's,,,
And Baltimore and Yankees still beating each other to death, I'm not real sure.

What does Baltimore and NY have to do with the AL west?

I'm think the magic # is 9?

If the rangers go 9-5, that means they would've won at least 2 out of the 7 games left against the A's (5 losses max), meaning if Oakland won every other game on their schedule left, the best record they could have is 12-2.

In this scenario the A's would only make up 3 out of the 4 game lead the rangers have.

So it seems to me that if the Rangers can win 9 games... I don't see any way they don't win the division

If the rangers win 11 games, they go 11-3. This would mean they won at least 4 games against the A's so if they won every other game left, the best record the A's could have is 10-4.

They would only gain 1 game on the rangers out of 4.

I don't think the magic # is 11. I think it would be 11 IF the 2 teams didn't have any games left between them this season. Pretty sure it's 9.

Their magic number is 11. That number means a combined number for Rangers wins and/or A's losses. If Texas Wins 11 games and Oakland does not lose, they clinch. If Texas loses 11 games but Oakland does also, they clinch. Any combination of Ranger wins and Oakland losses that equals 11 means the Rangers clinch. So, if Texas wins tonight and Oakland loses, then the magic number becomes 9.

Its 11. You have to figure in that any night the Rangers win and A's lose it would drop 2.

Because "the magic number" isn't exclusive to winning the division. It's simply a playoff birth which included 2 wildcard spots which does include cross divisional opponents.

I've always used this formula...

Magic Numbers: Determine the number of games yet to be played, add one, then subtract the number of games ahead in the loss column of the standings from the closest opponent.

Texas is 4 games ahead, with 14 games remaining. So here's Texas' magic number:
Games remaining: 14+1=15.
15 - 4 =11
The Rangers' magic number to clinch is 11.

Okay so 11 wins or losses combined between the 2, which is basically what I said when I said the rangers only need to WIN 9 games. That would ensure at least 2 losses for Oakland.

9+2=11.

Simple fact of the matter is, if Texas wins 9 games, they win the division. That's how I look at it.
