Being the new kid on the block in 3A...it's my turn to ask the board for predictions on this game. La Marque's first two games were against 50 year rivals in which I've witnessed 40 or more of.

I watched the Coldspring - Navasota contest, but it's different watching the game on video. You can't see the whole scenario. How the coaches are coaching, the players body language on the sideline, fan involvement. All those little things that affect the outcome of a high school football game.

Predictions ?

Does CS usually play on grass, or is ther stadium turf? I'm afraid it's going to be a wet, slick, and soft field for the first 3A test.

No. 9 Coldspring is No. 1 Coogs' next test

Published September 14, 2012 LA MARQUE — There’s no time to rest for the La Marque Cougars — not this week, at least.

After emerging unscathed in emotional games against rivals Ball High and Texas City, the Cougars should have the right to take the foot off the accelerator a bit. But if they do it in today’s home game, they might finally slip up.

La Marque, the top-ranked team in the Class 3A poll, will host No. 9 Coldspring-Oakhurst Trojans at 7:30 p.m. at Etheredge Stadium.

“Every coach tells his guys they can’t afford to have a letdown, but every game is not the same,” La Marque coach Mike Jackson said. “You can’t expect them to play at the same level every week, but you hope they play up to expectations.”

Coldspring entered last week ranked No. 2 before losing to now second-ranked Navasota, 36-8. It was Coldspring’s fourth loss in the last two years, an impressive 29-4 run. Coldspring has a ground-and-pound running game and likes to control the clock.

“They’re very good at what they do,” Jackson said. “We don’t want to get in a dogfight with them.”

Jackson would prefer to take the Navasota route, which means getting an early lead and forcing Coldspring out of its element. The Trojans have yet to complete a pass this season.

La Marque will need another big performance from senior defensive end Lawrence Montegut, who terrorized the Texas City backfield in last week’s victory. Senior defensive linemen Val Allen, Jeff Sowell and Mike Parker also will be counted on upfront.

“We’ve got to make a point of stopping their run,” Jackson said. “And we need to get the ball in the end zone.”

La Marque’s offense struggled to score in the first half against Texas City, but senior quarterback Demun Mercer is building chemistry with receivers Daniel Lee and Thomas Ward, and sophomore running back Ladarrian Ellis-Jones has emerged as a reliable option in the ground attack.
