SW falls yard short in 20-16 loss

You knew the Mustangs would find a way to win here Friday when Sweetwater and Andrews renewed their old rivalry.
Unfortunately for a large homecoming crowd, it was the visiting Mustangs who came out on top — but just barely — in a 20-16 thriller.
Andrews (2-0) opened up a double-digit (20-10) lead with 4:40 left when quarterback Shane Dolgener hit Austin Luna with a 25-yard touchdown pass.
But Sweetwater needed just 73 seconds of playing time to cut it to 20-16 when quarterback Sean Morrow led a furious drive which he capped with a 2-yard run.
Then, after an apparent onsides kick recovery was denied by the officials, the host Mustangs came up big on defense with a 3-and-out stand and got it back for the offense at their 22-yard line with 2:41 to play.
Needing 78 yards for the winning touchdown, Sweet-water got 77.
Over half of it came on a spectacular 40-yard reception by Willie Norman that got it to the Andrews 22. A sack and procedure penalty on Sweetwater moved the ball all the way back to the 37, but Norman caught a 22-yard pass from Morrow and Tadeo Canon-Masjoan ran for 7 yards to give the Mustangs first-and-goal from the 8.
Sweetwater appeared out of time and hope when a fourth-down pass — once again to Norman — from the 8 fell incomplete. How-ever, Andrews was flagged for being offside, giving the Mustangs another chance from the 4 with 15 seconds left. Morrow kept the ball and weaved his way through a number of defenders until being met near the goal line and stopped inside the 1.
Andrews took over with :09 showing and ran out the clock to claim the victory.
Sweetwater (1-1) — which is on the road for its final three non-district games and then has an open date before kicking off 4-3A action here on Oct. 11 against Snyder — came in hoping to start 2-0 for the first time since head coach Shane Mobley was previously employed here as defensive coordinator.
But Andrews, after trailing 10-6 at halftime, took the lead with a pair of long scoring drives and survived Sweetwater’s late rally.
Sweetwater took the second half kickoff and drove to Andrews’ 39 before a fourth-down pass fell in-complete. The visitors then went up 14-10 with a 14-play, 61-yard drive which ate up nearly eight minutes and resulted in a 1-yard sneak by Dolgener for the touchdown with 12 seconds left in the third quarter as well as a two-point pass conversion.
Sweetwater drove to Andrews’ 13 only to come up short again on fourth down, and Andrews then scored its final touchdown.
“Somebody’s got to win and somebody’s got to lose,” said Mobley. “In the end you try to learn and build on it and try to improve.
“We’ve got to figure out how to keep our offense going and play four quarters, and that takes time.”
Sweetwater did, however, outgain Andrews 399-351 with 217 yards passing and 182 rushing. Morrow, who did not start but played most of the final three quarters, was 10-of-17 for 169 yards and directed the last two scoring drives. Five different players caught passes and seven ran the ball at least once. Bray Amos was the top receiver with six catches for 73 yards while Marquees Jenkins had 63 yards to lead all rushers.
Sweetwater’s starting QB, Kaegan Jeffrey, led a drive that resulted in a 30-yard field goal by Canon-Masjoan that gave Sweetwater the game’s first lead early in the second quarter. Andrews came back to take a 6-3 lead on a Dolgener run from 2 yards out with 8:52 left until halftime, missing the extra point.
But Sweetwater — which will be playing another former district rival, Breckenridge, this Friday in Breckenridge — responded by regaining a 10-6 lead and moving 75 yards in just seven plays. Amos caught a 31-yard pass to Andrews’ 12 and Morrow ran 10 yards to set up Canon-Masjoan’s 2-yard plunge for the TD, followed by the game’s only extra point kick. Sweetwater tried to kick one after get-ting within 20-16 during the fourth quarter, but threw incomplete instead following a bad snap.
