Yes. No turnovers.

Only one fumbled snap. That came on shotgun snap that Bell let go between his hands.

Columbia started some kids that hasn't had much playing time thus far and also worked some soph. in the backfield. I think its good to give these kids some PT because they will be needed later in the season.

It was very aggrevating to see Needville be able to move the ball on us coming right down the gut. Glad to see the boys taking better care of the pigskin though.

From The Facts...

Slowly but surely, ’Necks pull out win

By ANTHONY MAENZA | Posted: Saturday, September 8, 2012 2:00 am
NEEDVILLE — The tortoise almost won another race Friday.
Needville’s slow-paced offense threw Columbia off its game for a while, but the Roughnecks were able to get into the end zone enough to come away with a 28-0 victory.
Columbia (2-0) was stymied so much by the Blue Jays’ 5-yards-and-cloud-of-dust offense, their offense was able to run only 18 plays in the first half.

“Their offense had us so out of sync, we weren’t able to do what we wanted to do on offense,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “In the second half, the defense played better and we did what we had to do to win.”

Although the defense bent many times against the Needville offense, it didn’t break and allowed only 154 total yards.

“They did what they felt they had to do to win the game,” Lynch said of Needville’s offensive approach.

Perhaps the closest the Blue Jays came to making things interesting came early in the second quarter. With the Roughnecks leading 6-0, Needville had a first and goal at the Columbia 5. But a penalty and a Floyd Bess interception stopped the scoring opportunity.

“Floyd made a great play,” Lynch said. “He was all over the field for us on defense.”

Bess made an impact on offense as well, rushing for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

A seven-yard touchdown run from Bess with 6:05 left in the fourth quarter finally put some space between the two former district foes. The run capped a 53-yard drive.

Quarterback Darius Bell finally put a nail in Needville’s coffin with a two-yard touchdown run with 3:40 left in the game. Bell, who started the game at quarterback, had a 32-yard run down to the Blue Jay 2 to set up the score.

Bell finished the game with 58 yards rushing.

In the first half, Columbia struggled to get things going on offense.
Thrown off by the methodical Needville offense, Columbia made the most of its offensive possessions.

After a LaMarquis Fields punt return to the Blue Jay 41, it didn’t take long for the Roughnecks to get into the end zone.

Bess capped the short drive with a 26-yard touchdown run with 4:15 left in the first quarter. The extra point kick failed.

With 1:35 left in the first half, the Roughnecks marched 64 yards for their second score of the game.
Sophomore Brandon Harris pulled in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Bell with only 14 seconds left in the second quarter to cap the quick drive. Jerry Wayne Cotten caught a two-point conversion pass from Willis Johnson to put Columbia up 14-0 at the half.

Yes, smart playing those that need some game time experience heading into district play. No need to risk injury of a stud, when 2-3 strings can handle the job. Nice win Columbia.
