8 Fumbles by the Coogs...lost 4 of them!!!!

223 Rushing
220 Passing

22 First Downs
Ball had 4 first downs

those stats according to the Chronicle

They better clean up the turnovers but overall typical LaMarque-Ball rivalry game.

The La Marque Cougars proved Thursday night that UIL classification is a measure of enrollment, not talent.

In their debut game as a Class 3A team, the Cougars pummeled the rival Class 4A Ball High Tors, 35-12, in the Clash of the Causeway.

Dwindling enrollment and depth didn’t play a factor as the Cougars systematically defeated the Tors for the ninth time in their last 10 meetings.

The La Marque success was characterized by one blinding star on offense and a stifling defense.

Senior quarterback Demun Mercer was every bit as good as advertised in his first game as a Cougar after transferring from Houston Chavez. Mercer threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns on 11 of 12 passing and added 135 rushing yards and two touchdown runs on just 15 carries.

“I loved the crowd, I love the blue and gold, and I loved this atmosphere,” Mercer said. “We have some things to clean up, but this was a pretty fun first game.”

In his first half of play at Etheredge Stadium, the newfound playmaker rushed for 107 yards on 10 carries and passed for 123 yards on a perfect 6-for-6 passing line.

When he passed, he was quick and effective.

When he ran, he was flashy and elusive.

At times, he showcased his strength by rushing it straight up the gut, and the Ball defense had no answers.

Mercer found senior receiver Daniel Lee for touchdown passes of 57 and 25 yards and also hit Thomas Ward for a 37-yard touchdown pass. Sophomores Laderrian Ellis-Jones (59 yards on 14 carries) and Alan Cooper (38 yards receiving) proved they could be the future of the Cougars’ offense.

Despite Mercer’s performance, the inexperienced Cougars offense struggled to hold onto the ball, fumbling eight times and turning the ball over four times. La Marque coach Mike Jackson said in 213 games as a head coach, he had never coached a team that fumbled eight times.

“We expect sloppy, we expect missed assignments, but we don’t expect them to drop the ball like that,” Jackson said of his team, ranked No. 2 in the state among 3A teams. “We’re not going to win squat if we can’t hold onto the football. It’s just absolutely unacceptable.”

But on the other side of the ball, the veteran Cougars defense allowed the Tors just 103 yards (86 rushing on 31 carries, 17 passing) and one touchdown, had five sacks and forced three turnovers.

The Tors finally found life in the third quarter when senior Derrick Decker recovered a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown to end the shutout. On the next series, the Tors’ offense scored on a 19-yard run by senior Ario Holmen.

Holmen had 42 yards on 12 carries.

“Right now, we’re better than we were at the end of last season,” Ball coach Tony Valastro said. “These kids fought their butts off, but they still don’t believe in themselves. We’re going to get there.”

Ball looks to end its 20-game losing streak next week against KIPP Sunnyside, while La Marque visits Texas City in another rivalry showdown
