Brenham football player Justin Davis has shown encouraging signs in his recovery from last week’s stroke, moving his left leg slightly Monday.

Coach Glen West said Brenham players and coaches have gotten a boost from each good report on Davis as the Cubs prepare for their season opener at home against Richmond Foster on Friday night.

“There was big-time encouraging news [Monday],” West said. “There were a few times that he actually moved his left leg a little bit. He also brushed his own teeth with his right arm, which is miles and miles from where he had been.

“We’re always checking in with him and we’re also trying to do our job and be ready to go, and our kids are, too. It helps when you’re hearing encouraging words. We’re excited for the encouraging signs.”

Davis remains under intensive care at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. West said Davis is able to sit up and had his breathing tube removed, but he continues to use a feeding tube.

Doctors indicated Davis could be moved from intensive care into a room for stroke victims within a couple of days, West said.

Last Wednesday, Davis underwent surgery after he suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot in his carotid artery after practice. He had another surgery Thursday to relieve pressure on his brain.

The Cubs played a scrimmage at Round Rock Westwood on Friday. Members of the Westwood booster club presented school officials with a check of $4,400 for Davis and his family.

“They raised that in a day,” West said. “We were just blown away. It was amazing.”

West said his players are dealing with the circumstances surrounding Davis’ stroke well as they go through the first week of classes and prepare for their season opener.

“It’s a learning experience for all of us,” West said. “They’ve been shaken. We’ve tried to explain to them that he wants to be here with all of his heart and he’s fighting like crazy there, and he’s expecting them to do the same thing here. They’re working at it.

“We’ve got a bunch of young players that are trying to grow up, so we’ve got a lot on our plates. I think he’ll be with us this season and forever, and of course we hope to have him with us as a member of our team again.”

Davis, considered a college prospect going into his senior year, was expected to be one of few proven veterans in a rebuilding season for the Cubs.

I was totally unaware of this situation. Thank you for posting it and let's all keep young Mr. Davis in our prayers. The early news sounds positive.
