The are both great guns. I prefer the .25-06 but they are both very versatile guns. For me, the .243 just lacks the knock down ability of the .25-06. I am sure that you would be happy with either.

#1 is my vote. Great gun. Put a Zeiss scope on it, I hear they are good... :nerd:

25-06, without a doubt will outperform the .243 in hunting capabilities. It has much more knock-down power, almost as much muzzle velocity, and a better all-around pedigree for big game hunting than does the .243. I bought my son a .243 when he was 9, and he hunted successfully with it til high school, but then inherited my .270 when I went to the 7mm ultra mag., which is a literal cannon of a gun. I think you would be happier in the long run with the 25-06. It's also a great gun for Western hunts when you have to hike many distances over rugged terrain. It's lightweight design and ease of use is hard to beat.

Get an assault rifle and a crossbow, just in case.

Either one, just practice your marksmanship. The rifle of choice isn't nearly as important if you can place a round down range with precision.

25-06 is good all around gun for Texas hunting, someone said big game, not so much there, but great overall gun with speed and accuracy.

I dont think you can say this is better than that...kinda depends on what you want the gun for.

Just looking for an all around gun that can be used on anything in Texas and not too powerful since it will be my first gun.

I bought my wife a 25-06 for hunting a couple of years ago. That thing is the sweetest shooting gun I own. If she isnt hunting, I take her gun everytime.

I got that .243 about 8 years ago. Shot lots of pigs and a deer with it. It's a nice gun, but I haven't shot it in a while.

When you say all around Texas hunting, that can mean quite a lot. How about max range you plan on shooting and what kind of animals?

Get the 700 ADL in 25-06. It's a better quality gun than the 770. You'll like the 25-06 better anyway. More power than the .243.

OK have we killed it yet. 25.06 is a good weapon. Nice ballistics and some power. but it comes down to what are you shooting? Like some have said game size on this gun will be limited. Elk is probably about the limit. I would not try a bear or moose. Deer no problem. My favorite is the 7 mm magnum. But it is a cannon. If my brother had not put it together for me I would have stayed with a 308 or 30.06.
