10. Toss up between Kingsville and Rio Hondo

I mention Kingsville because they are bringing back some high numbers, and made the playoffs in a very tough 4A district with the likes of Calallen and Alice in their district. I'd mention Hidalgo, but it's too soon to tell how they will respond with a new coach and a Freshman QB.

I think I read where that Hidalgo qb is being looked at by some pretty serious D1 schools nationwide already, and he has been attending special qb camps by invitation. I think I also read that he already has the size(6'0, 190) and skill sets to be a top recruit in his class. Correct me if I am wrong, TarponFan, but I am down here working in McAllen/Mission on this hailstorm for the year and thought I read that article somewhere.

That's all true. However, Hidalgo did graduate a lot of kids last year, and their defense was very suspect. Although they were in 4A last year, they lost games they had no business losing.

You must be a roofer or something, I remember there being a gigantic hailstorm in the McAllen area earlier this year. Guess that's where the work is at, huh? How do you like it down there?

I like this one. The others had Bellville ahead of Sealy. Even though I am a MAJOR Bellville fan, I think RSJ and the rest of the Tigers are going to be handful this year. They have a RB already committed to Rice as well. The bulls lost some key leadership on both sides of the ball. I would love nothing more than to whip up on the kitty cats, but they deserve to be ranked ahead of Bellville. That way when we upset them, it looks better for us!!!:tongue::tongue:

Not sure of other schedules yet but Giddings plays Liberty Hill, Wimberley, and Bellville in that order for preseason. After that, I'll know a bunch more as to where to put my Homey picks.

Here's a little "food for thought" regarding Hidalgo. This was posted by a Hidalgo fan over on the 956 boards who is "in the know" about more stuff than I knew about. Quote below. Important parts in BOLD

The QB position at Hidalgo is one of the least concerns...it is finding depth at positions including WR,OL,RB from a program that didnt even have a freshman team last year. If they get 3rd place it won't be because of the QB it will be because Coach Ford was able to put a team together from the mess left by the previous regime. If he gets 3rd place, Ford should be coach of the year.

Rio Hondo has been the talk of the district the last 4-5yrs, but they lost a ton of players. While PI will probably have its best defense and running corps it's had in the last 7yrs or so... so look for PI will surprise some ppl this year and claim the District outright this year. Hidalgo been getting some good recognition in several of these polls, but most of the fans down here are pegging Hidalgo with possibly securing the 3rd and final playoff spot.

I think its fair to have Wimberley in the Top 3...I just cannot give an honest opinion yet as to whether we will be #1 or #3 (unlike last year at this time)!!! Lot's of kids will have to step up quite a bit. But the obvious advantage we have...the coaching staff...can be counted on to get the very best out of them.

Wow someone's giving us props and putting us in the top 10 and it's not even a homer pick....with all we lost which was a lot, I truely believe Ingleside will still make some noise this year, I was surprised to see us ranked 2nd in district as per Dave Campbell. I hope we can live up to the expectation of the new season, I'm sure the first game against Refugio will tell a lot about us.

I was fortunate enough to hear a talk from Coach Rowe of Bellville at a local organization meeting. He is of course excited about what we have, rah rah, etc. He did give MAJOR props to El Campo and said they are going to be a tough one to get past. We have been fortunate enough to be relatively injury free. We have some minor bumps and bruises and he is going to hold a few guys out of the scrimmage but said there is no question they will be playing come opening kick off.

Is it OK to defer your pre-season rankings until after the first or second scrimmages?

It seems like most of the teams listed in the various Top 10 opinions will likely be Div II teams at playoff time?
I am thinking El Campo, Canyon Lake, and La Vernia are the only likely Div I schools showing up on the various lists.

Hidalgo @ Brownsville Rivera (5A) scrimmage highlights. Shea Patterson looks really good, very accurate passes. But just as I mentioned earlier, their defense looks suspect, especially against the run.

He's not exactly going out on a huge limb here...

If Wimberley wins D27, they'd be in line for the winner of D25 in round 2, which will probably be either Sealy or Bellville. And seeing as how I just named (IMHO) the three toughest teams in the region in that one sentence, it also wouldn't be surprising to pick the winner of that game to win the entire region.

I did this on the way down to Victoria for the Sweeny playoff game last season. It was the day after Thanksgiving, so the museums were closed, but it was still very cool to walk around the grounds with a couple of junior high kids who had just studied about Gonzales and the Runaway Scrape.

It's pretty sad that after 5 pages the Cuero Gobblers aren't even mentioned in a Region 4 top 10 poll thread. (unless I missed it)

Per DCTF the district coaches have us finishing last in district which is also pretty depressing. I just hope someday we can experience some level of success again.

Oh well, guess we'll just have to be patient. :(

Cuero played Bellville last year in Bellville in pre-district and they were a decent team, probably at least as good or better at that point in the season than all of our district opponents except for Sealy. If things are improved with the coaching change, as many posters seemed to indicate, I would expect Cuero to be better than last year. Bellville had a very down year in 2010 with a dismal 2-8 record, tough to take in a town that is used to winning teams and being in the playoffs. We had a coaching change and had a remarkable turnaround. Unless something dramatic has changed in Cuero, I would expect the Gobblers to be a topic of conversation again soon.
