Matt, I believe Somerset upset Princeton, so Cameron Yoe advanced to championship bracket to play WO-S.

It was HOT out there, but you have to live with it. I was most impressed with Stephenville. Offensively, they could not be stopped. The QB looked strong and they had a couple of good looking WR's(#1, #19).

If anyone is out there, make sure you come and see me. I will have some FNF magazines with me for just $5.

Stephenville and La Marque, both out in the first round of championship bracket. Maybe they were taking the small school bracket a little lightly. Or, maybe even small schools have some well coached and talented athletes.

"underwear olympics", thats funny! Merkel was good, looked like they must start practicing the 7 on 7 as soon as basketball is over. Lol...... WT practiced 7 on 7 twice I think. I'm glad we play it and the kids are competitive and want to win, but we don't take it very seriously. We did go 3 and 3 though.. We also had 3 senior starters and one other starter that didn't even make the trip. And yes the score would be reversed if it was a football game......

Good Job Bobcats. That just goes to show you how a small school like Celina will give you all you want no matter what the sport. Celina has had the respect from East Texas for a long time. They work hard and bring tradition to every sport. Hope to see the Bobcats and a team from the East meet in the playoffs.

Awesome job. Winning 5 games in that heat takes so much mental and physical toughness.

At the end of the tournament the team most like Celina was still playing. Graham played 7 on 7 exactly like Celina. The difference was they had 2 "go to" guys and Celina had 5. As soon as you see a team chucking the ball 30 yards downfield its over. 7 on 7 is just a game strategy. Celina scored on all but about 5 possessions all weekend. You better be pretty consistent to beat them as they play the game a very specific way that clearly works. 4 state championships in 13 years is not a fluke as you know they did not have the most talent in the state.

Matthew328
07-21-2012, 10:16 AM
to beat Celina you've got to be nearly perfect on offense..get all your PATs and then try to get one stop per half..they put a lot of pressure on your offense

Congrats to the Celina Bobcats, a pretty impressive victory (and history) in 7on7.

Somehow I think that the importance of this tournament as an indicator of regular season and playoff performance would be given greater weight by some/many, if Stephenville or LaMarque had won. With all due respect to Jeremy Linn, does anyone think Stephenville's early exit from the championship bracket is a chink in the Yellowjacket's armor?

You gotta hand it to Matthew328, he did call Celina as the runner-up, pretty close with the number of teams involved.

This weekend just proves even more that just because you move down from 4a doesn't mean your gonna win it all. Sville losing gives more teams in 3a confidence that they can beat them. I know some people who thought Sville was gonna walk all over 3a this have now changed their opinions just over 7on7. Sville will be handful in the regular season, but like a coach said over the weekend their a number of teams that can beat them.

Congrats to Celina!

I have a question to anyone who watches a lot of 7 on 7. How often do you see players get injured? Doesn't the risk of injury, travel, lack of coaching, ect.. overshadow any potential benifit? Heck Van still has players recovering from our last real football game against Gilmer. They play very very little 7 on 7 and don't travel to do it. Just enough to stay sharp. Hard to argue with that decision though as last year they broke nearly every Van school passing record. Just wondering if the risk is worth the reward.

I think the main benefit is related to leadership and team unity. I am most impressed by our teams ability to shake off a bad play or turnover and stick to the game plan. This is crucial with a young QB and I believe the past 2 summers are the equivalent to a seasons worth of maturity. There was a lot of trust built this summer and it more than offset the effort and potential risks.

I definitely think it is. Here we are 2 1/2 weeks away from 2-a-days and this group of 20 are nearly finishing each others sentences. In a young group like ours, this allowed a sophomore QB to come in and earn team respect through the summer amoungst the skilled positions, gain confidence he might not have had, and come into full workouts ready to lead.

Injuries are few and far between, kids get hurt more playing basketball etc that 7 on 7. I'm biased but the reward greatly outweighs the risk

I do agree. The more reps a team can get in the better they will work together as a team during the season. I think that is the reasons so many coaches support the 7 on 7. Just my opinion. And the fact that it is a fantastic experience for the players and parents alike. College Station and A&M provide and support an excellent venue for just such an event. And I might add that with the support of Addidas this year, it made for a very memorable experience for all.

I think the kids would like to wear their own colors, but uniforms aside, I think 7 on 7 also gives your defensive backs an opportunity to guard some of the best receivers in the sate. I saw some great defensive plays this weekend. Gives the D a chance to see their weaknesses exposed and they learn how to overcome, if they can. Practicing your technique against some of the best in the state has to be of benefit.

A little. The big issue is that no one is coached, in real football, to cover the same way as you have to in 7 on 7, hands off with no contact. Also, very few teams will sit in Cover 2, Man Under all of the time in real football like most teams do in The Underwear Olympics. Receivers run routes and catch balls with no fear of getting the crap knocked out of them and those crossing routes that are the staple of 7 on 7 should get "re- routed" in game situations...and by "re- routed" I mean cold cocked.

I do think that 7 on 7 is a fun, morale and team building activity that can help skill kids with their conditioning. It is also always good to compete, and for some, learn to compete.

it's not football until you get the big boys involved

it does help conditioning, etc... but non-contact is non-football

I think that's a great point I never considered. I know our kids played zone with Cover 2 over the top the whole summer bc we are a zone blitz team in the fall. I do agree anytime is a great chance to compete and heighten the kids football IQ.

We had a serious injury this year...crushed cheek / eye socket...man on man coverage on a criscross...we will do zone only from now on.

Ouch! I sure hope the kid gets back in the next few weeks and doesn't miss any of the season.

7 on 7 is good for football only when the teams run their own offense and defense. We only let our kids play our D and O and we usually get beat against the gimmick groups. But winning is not our goal. We were a new staff this spring and we had no spring ball. We saw 7 on 7 as an opportunity to install our passing game and base coverages and the opportunity to see our kids compete and see what their true mentality and character is.

I am kinda jazzed that Burnet beat Stephenville but it is what it is, flag football. Sorry, the hogs must be included for the real deal. Congrats to Celina though, you guys take enough garbage for this to feel sweet!

I think it's hilarious that Stephenville got eliminated. If they are as good as they think they are, they should have coasted to a championship. Hmmm...

I'm not as excited as some that they got beat, but everybody thought they would walk all over everybody. I expect them to be awesome this season, but like 7 on 7 it wont be a cake walk for them come playoff time.

You said what I wanted to say but held myself back. To clarify, that was an early exit from the championship bracket. I have noticed that Stephenville posters are few and far between recently. It's tough when the season hasn't even started and it's already a disappointment. We all know that winning the state 7on7 tourney was the first part of the dream season playing out in the minds of Yellowjacket fans when they convinced that family of Mexicans to leave town for "snapshot day" and they magically became a 3a contender. One of the Stephenville posters, don't remember which one, even told us how he danced for joy in his living room when he heard the news that they had dropped down. I guess he is not dancing right now.

We have all said it over and over that moving down to 3a doesn't mean success or you are gonna kick everybodies butt. Brownwood had to learn that tough lesson and their posters are much more humble. Lots of great football in 3a and if they Sville hasn't learned that yet they will come November!

I was not going to comment on this matter but....

We are talking about 7 on 7 right? Glorified flag football? One 7 on 7 loss does not equal a semi finals loss in the Fall last time I checked. 25-1 this summer and we are already being ripped off by some of you guys as Pretenders.

I agree that any transition to any classification will be challenging whether we drop or move up. You have to become aware of your surroundings. We know that there are excellent teams in 3a. We will be competitive and we intimidate folks when we step on that field for the 2012 season.

@ orange machine.
Who or whatever coach you talked to, that coach better say that we can beat Stephenville. I wouldn't want a coach that said we can't, right? His ass would need to be finding a new job.

Someone said that Merkel handled Wimberely pretty good, 42-6? Then that poster said if it was a Friday night game that score would have been switched. Well, I would go on a limb and say we would handle Burnet pretty good on any given Friday night.

I wouldn't write us off because we lost 1 game of touch and take this for what it is worth. I would rather be humbled now in 3A to a good Burnet 7 on 7 team rather than learning our lesson after a loss in the State Semi Finals when real football is being played.

Sorry this post is so late. Work never ends.

Nobody is writing y'all off atleast I'm not. I think y'all will be dang good in the regular season and I've stated that already. I have no illusions as to the difference between touch football and real football. The thing is most people thought y'all would take over College Station and it didn't happen. My point is that during the playoffs it gets extreamly tough to win and what happened to y'all in 7 on 7 can easily happen in the playoffs. Any team that over looks y'all is done and I'm sure nobody will over look y'all. By the way the hole stepping on the field intimidating teams will only happen to teams that arnt any good. Y'all want be intimidating teams in the playoffs just saying. I do however expect y'all to make a deep run so good luck.

I found it interesting that the consensus Top 3 teams in the fall...Stephenville, La Marque and Carthage...all lost in the first round of the Championship bracket.

For Sville, it proves if you show up flat vs a team that has game, you're going to get beat. Apparently an honest opinion from someone that was there. Burnet is talented. There can be a million excuses but if you don't take it seriously enough, the end.

Some think it was good for Sville to get beat. Like I've told many here, it's not going to be a cake walk. 3A not much different than 4A.

I think the Fall will show the true talent this team has. They will be tough to beat.

I wasn't surprised Brownwood got beat. They are going to be good in the Fall too, but not there yet. Just wait until that OL and the QB get in the groove.

The most dangerous game in the state tourney is the first game on day 2. Every year upsets happen in that round. Kids are tired from the day before, many are very tight and havent stretched properly. Some kids stay up to late at the hotel. Many reasons cant explain it, I dont think it proves or disproves anything about Stephenville.

On a side note, I am afraid Adidas is going to ruin this for everybody. Big money is involved now.

So Stephenville and La Marque did not fare well on day two of the real UFL (Underwear Football League). I hope the rest of 3A doesn’t take that as a sign we can’t play football. That would be a mistake!

I think the idea that there are no other large, powerful, talented, well coached football teams with great traditions in 3-A that can compete with them is something that most of us don't believe. We could be wrong, but that is why they play the game.

Intimidate folks? Maybe some teams but not as many as you might think.........Be careful, goin' out on a limb usually results in a crackin' sound!....Ouch!!...So, ya'll can handle Burnet on any given Friday huh? You're either very cocky or very confident or a little of both...ain't nothin' wrong with that.......you are very passionate about your boys...so am I and don't even have a kid playin' varsity.....I'm sure Stephenville is goin' to be a fine team...
7 on 7 is what it is...all it proved last weekend is Stephenville has some nice skill position players, and so does Burnet...THAT'S IT!....oh, and Burnet WON with a team comprised of mostly sophs & juniors!:D(that last little line was just for ribbin' effect!):taunt:......
This will be a rebuilding year for Burnet and their new coach but one should never underestimate what they might bring to the table....To be honest, I'm more excited about what's coming down the assembly line!...I think the timing is goin' to be just right down the road a ways and the wheels will be rollin' with Coach Jones and his system in place......Go Dawgs!.....Stephenville, Raymondville, Vaudeville, Gooberville, whatever......we ain't skeered!

I think more than anything Sville and the Coogs getting beat early just shows that other teams skilled position players outside of 4a and 5a can hang and match up with the bigger schools. I expect Sville and the Coogs to be tough as nails to beat and any team that takes them lightly will get their head kicked in. I doubt though that any team takes them lightly.
