My Buckeye Buddy attended the Van track meet yesterday...I missed out 'cause I was painting my house...I know, get my priorities straight...he sent me a copy of his report on the meet & I wanted to share his comments:

The real surprise to me was Santos. That guy has so many athletic talents to be as big as he is. He got 3rd in the shot, 1st in the discus, anchored the 4X100 “Big Man” relay (I think the runners had to be over 200 lbs) but anyway, he finished 1st in that and if running the 4X100 relay wasn’t enough he finished 6th in the 800m and then turned around and finished 2nd in the 200m. I’ve never known anyone to be good at the shot and discus and then turn around and do well running 100m, 200m and 800m. I’ve never even know anyone to be good at both the 200m and 800m, but if he hadn’t used up his five events, I’m sure he would have been running in some more. He was starting to remind me of Bill Bradley from Palestine.

I want to acknowledge the accomplishments of a young man who is destined for greatness. Sic 'em...oh wait, that was the other bunch...

Sounds like a Jim Thorpe type to me.

There was a guy named Todd Howard at Bryan HS back in the early 80's that won the 5A state meet in the discus at 185 something and also ran a 13.6 100m hurdles. I've got a golfing buddy that coached for 30 yrs at Bryan and at Abilene Cooper (following Randy Allen) and had some quality athletes (Rod Bernstine, Dominique Rhodes, etc) and he said this Todd Howard was by far the best athlete he ever saw at the HS level as far as being able to do it all. I remember Marty Akins at Gregory Portland won state in the shot and was also the UT Qb a couple years later. Don't see that every day either.

He has his weight down to 250 now.. Two weeks ago his laser timed 40 was 4.57.. Says he is hoping to get it down in the 4.4s before he arrives in Austin.

Frank Pollard from Meridian back in the 70's. Won state in the 100, 200, 4x100, shot, and discus. Went on to play with Baylor and the Steelers. Only 1A but impressive nonetheless. Still has the state scoring record in track, I believe.
