Thanks for the heads up. We usually travel well but that drive might weed a few out.

That is true. Henderson did "drill" Pine Tree last year, beating them by 31... BUT the Henderson defense did get abused in the process....giving up 419 yards on the ground...

Van/PT is an interesting match up....

Your right it will be an interesting match up. While Pine Tree didn't win last year they were competitive in many of their games including a win vs. Marshall, only losing to LE by 6 and Jacksonville by 7. Anyway, PT is a major step up from playing our traditional first game against 2A Grand Saline. Btw, I looked at the box score and PT scored 20 of their 27 points on Henderson in the 1st half so those points were not in "garbage time".

I think Pine Tree will be a good test for Van. Pine Tree made huge strides last year under their first-year head coach. I look for them to be even more competitive this year. They may not win more than three or four games, but they will be competitive in at least six or seven of their games, in my opinion. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win five or six games this year. If they get past the losing "culture" there they do have some athletes.

I don't remember anybody saying Pine Tree is a "real powerhouse", but they are improving. Their head coach will be in his second year, and they made some huge strides last year. It'll be interesting to see if they can keep improving. The biggest problem I've seen with Pine Tree is their "losing culture". If their coach can change that mental part of their program, they will be much more competitive week in and week out. It's certainly a step up for Van to play a 4A team (Pine Tree) than a 2A team (Grand Saline), especially early in the season. Offensively, they are much better than they have been in recent years. If the Pirates can improve defensively they could actually make a strong push at .500 or better. We'll see....

That first year coach would be Fitzhenry, the ex Giddings coach. Coach Fitz will get them ready to play and get the most out of them!

I agree buckeye playing a 4a is better than a 2A. I think Van still should win by at least a couple of td. I agree they got a good coach and henderson lost that losing attitude. 5 seasons in the 2000s of crowning homecoming queens.

I think that's the key to turning the program around at Pine Tree, the mental part. If Coach Fitzhenry can change the losing culture (no easy task) over there, they have the athletes to be competitive. The fans and the school will have to be very patient, though, and that's not something they are known for there.

I agree. He will get the most out of his players. The toughest parts of coaching at Pine Tree is getting the athletes roaming the halls to go out for football, and to change the culture of losing there.
