• Leland Surovik, athletic director/head football coach, Columbia

Heard he is a finalist for the Victoria East job. New coach to be named on Jan 19th. Think I'd stay at WC.

Is Travis Reeve's son going to be a senior? Might be a perk getting Travis. Seen Blake play some at CH this past year, and he did a solid job at QB.

How old is Surovik and how long has he been at Columbia? he's a pretty young guy. 40 maybe? this is his first head coaching job.

He was defensive coordinator under Brian Lane for a few years until Lane stepped down to start selling insurance. At that time, Surv was promoted to AD/HC and he's been great for Columbia so far. He's prolly been at columbia for 8 or 9 years now total? HC/AD for about the last 4?

My memory is shady about all the details. some of it may be wrong, but its atleast close lol

Leeland's a great guy and one can't blame him for going after the VE job. Its gonna pay really well and from what I understand, East has the better athletes of the 2 schools. Plus, its his hometown. Like it or not, that's important for some people.

If he wants it, I hope he gets it.

Sadly, just one more example of 3A (possibly) losing a great coach to a larger classification. Although I for one will not fault a guy for career advancement. He would be missed at CHS.

I agree. Hate to see WC have to make a change though if he departs. Columbia has a real shot at winning state with what's returning. A new coach/system, if they go outside to replace, might hamper things for a year or so.

I'd hate to see him go. He's very well liked among the students. He's very good to his players and everyone likes him, not just the football guys. Not to mention leading columbia through these last 2 semifinal runs.

I do wish him the best in whichever route he goes. He's made Columbia a contender and always has his players representing our school well.

He was a WR at Churchhill

Blake was a back up QB. Completed like 63% of his passes. I don't recall hearing he played WR. Stat's don't show him catching a pass this year.

Crazy that the Ingleside coach applied, too.

Now about the WC coach, you gotta realize that Victoria has always had some great athletes. But the most important thing about this thing is buffets: Victoria buffets>DubC buffets. :D

I agree, but VE has a hard decision of their own. There are some good candidates the board has to agree on before they can make an offer.

I bet Condra gets it since he used to be at Victoria Memoria way back when. Victoria has never been real strong in football. They have always struggled in just making the playoffs. Stroman was real weak during it's existence. There are just no top athletes in this town

I thought Victoria was pretty decent when Reeves was there. They did well until they ran into the Austin/San Antonio teams back in the day, I thought. Maybe memory serves me wrong...

I'd sure like to see him stay with the success columbia's had lately. If he leaves, i sure as hell hope they offer his job to the current O.C. He really has brought a lot to the program and i believe he is big time responsible for a lot of the success in the two years he's been there. If columbia doesn't offer surovik more money it will be a huge mistake on their part and if not, they'd be real stupid not to atleast offer it to the guy who shares a lot of the responsibility for being where they are.

Dont see a coaching change changing those kids or parents mind about moving to WC. The program and talent will still have a lot to offer. Besides, WC's O.C. came from sweeny only two seasons ago andwas well liked over there from what i've heard. Still hearing from a few across the river that a possibility of atleast three moving. Mark Reeve never lost a district game in nine years as the head coach at Victoria High. He never lost a district game in eight years at Cuero. Hard to argue with that success. Travis is a clone of his dad. The sad thing is, he didn't even get an interview at East. Don't know what they are smoking over there. Maybe Travis is destined to go somewhere else. :)

There is some tension between Hesseltine and the Ingleisde superintendant. My understanding of the situation is that Hesseltine removed the baseball coach from his job and the superintendant gave the job back to him.

You bet the Hesseltine's have been a big baseball and softball family in Sinton for years and have been a hugh factor in our success in these sports for Sinton. They have devoted much of their time and expense in delveloping young players at the little league level. Coach Graig would be an excellent evaluator of a baseball coach in my opinion.

Must have been the money unless, he did it to try to get more money out of WC. Can't see someone withdrawing unless the money wasnt right or using it as leverage at present job. Money talks and you know what walks. Glad to see him stay and i hope the decision was easy for him. Nothing like regrets after the fact.
