It is time for an update. These are plays that were won by a last play score as time expired. Texas has had 7 such wins since 1987 and except for the first one that was decided by a touchdown they were decided by field goals. Strange that after 94 years of football Texas had it's first one in 1987. Also only one was decided in Austin with 4 of the others at the other team's home field. The Michigan game was decided in the Rose Bowl in California and Nebraska was decided in Arlington in the Big 12 Championship. The games are as follows:
1. On 10-17-87 in Arkansas we have the ball at the Arkansas 18 yard line with 4 seconds in the game and are losing 14 to 10. Time expires as QB Bret Stafford throughs a pass to WR Tony Jones who was about a yard in the end zone. The pass is perfect and Jones mades a good catch as he is hit hard just as the ball gets to him. He hangs on to the ball and UT wins 16 to 14. The extra point is not played which wasn't necessary since at that time only the scoring team could score points on the extra point or points try.
2. On 10-21-95 in Austin we trail Virginia 14 to 16 with 4 seconds left. Phil Dawson (not Phil C) kicks a 50 yard field goal against a 20 mph wind to give us the win 17-16 as time runs out.
3. We are tied with Iowa State at 41 all on 10-30-99. On the last play Kris Stockton kicks an 18 yard field goal to win it for us 44 to 41 and we don't have to play in OT.
4. In the 2005 Rose Bowl on 1-1-05 with 2 seconds on the clock Dusty Mangum kicks the winning 37 yard field goal as time expires and we win 38 to 37. In the post game interviews Vince Young says we will be back to play in the NC game next year which we do and win it.
5. On 11-3-07 we are tied with Oklahoma State at 35 all but Ryan Bailey kicks a 40 yard field goal as time exspires to win it for us 38 to 35 and we don't have to go into OT.
6. On 12-5-09 we beat Nebraska as time expires with a 46 yard field goal by Hunter Lawerence. We almost run the clock out as Colt passes the ball out of bounds but fortunately there is one second left left on the clock. The play was set up when Colt McCoy passed to Jordan Shipley and Nebraska did a horse collar tackle and moved it up 15 yards into field goal range.
7. On 11-24-11 in CS we play the Texas A&M Aggies in what might be the last game with them for a long time and the Aggies lead 25 to 24. Another McCoy figures in as Colt's younger brother Case sets us up in field goal range with a 25 yard run to the Aggie 23 yard line with less than a minute to play. With 3 seconds left in the game Justin Tucker kicks the winning field goal as time expires and UT wins 27to 25.
