Saenz avoided the sack like twice, stepped up threw long downfield... Complete as the DB hit the receiver as the ball got there.

Unbelievable game and maybe finally WC will get some of the credit they deserve. Held chill to their season low in points I think and had the lead until 8 seconds left

Great season WC! You guys should hold your heads high after the way you played all year long. even though you lost the big one to another great team you showed everyone how outstanding and classy the Roughnecks are this season going 13-1 all the way to the semifinal.. Give credit to CH for a spectacular drive with 1:50 and no time outs from their own 32. This was a game to be remembered for a long time with both teams giving all they had until the final seconds. It is too bad that only one team advances but the Roughnecks have made a statement and we all took notice last night. Thanks for the exciting ride, it was a good year.

8 SECONDS AWAY: Late Chapel Hill TD topples Roughnecks in state semifinals

NACOGDOCHES — Columbia's blowout loss to Tyler Chapel Hill a year ago in the Class 3A Division I state semifinal game was a painful memory that stuck with the Roughnecks for a full year.
Their loss in the rematch Friday night hurts even more.
In an unbelievable comeback, Chapel Hill marched 71 yards to score with only eight seconds left on the clock to pull out a dramatic 21-16 win against Columbia at Homer Bryce Stadium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin University. The win sends the Bulldogs to the state championship game for the second consecutive year.

Being so close to a trip to the title game and avenging last year's loss, only to see it snatched away, was devastating to the Roughnecks and head coach Leland Surovik.

"It hurts bad, it hurts bad," Surovik said. "The kids played hard and played well, but Chapel Hill is a good team."

The ‘Necks had fought back from an early 14-0 deficit and taken the lead on an improbable play.

With the score tied 14-all, the Roughnecks took a two-point advantage with 5:42 remaining when Bulldog punter Nelson Onwuzu could not stop a snap that sailed way over him into the end zone, resulting in a safety and a 16-14 Roughneck lead.

Columbia twice had the ball in Chapel Hill territory after that, but could not put the game away. Its last chance to ice things came with 2:09 remaining when, after the Bulldogs had burned their final timeout, Sean Flannel was stuffed on a fourth-and-2 play, giving Chapel Hill the ball at its own 29.

"We just couldn't make a couple of yards when we needed it, and if we had, we could have killed the game for us," Surovik said.

Chapel Hill gained a quick few yards on first down, then Justin Hussey sacked Bulldog quarterback Avery Saenz on a shoestring tackle for a loss that would lead to a fourth-and-8 play.

Saenz eluded the Roughneck rush and connected with Tre Allen for a 43-yard gain to the Columbia 25 with less than a minute remaining. Three more plays put the ball at the Roughneck 14, when Saenz found Onwuzu in the middle of the end zone for the go-ahead score.

The Roughnecks fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Chapel Hill recovered as time ran out.

Columbia safety Treylon Johnican was on Onwuzu when he caught the ball.

"This really hurts because it is two years in a row, and it is just all my fault because that was my dude and I couldn't get to him," Johnican said, his helmet still on. "I just feel like I let my team down."

Surovik , though, said the last drive by Chapel Hill was the result of a good team doing what it had to do to win.

"They are an explosive offense and they came up with some big plays there at the end," Surovik added. "I wish I could have it all back to do it all over again, but you don't get those chances. They are a heck of a football team and they made the plays when they needed them."

It was Saenz's ability to escape the rush that eventually did the 'Necks in.

"That last drive, we were just trying to get it done and so were they until that final buzzer," Columbia defensive lineman Quinton Bell said. "We stuck in there and just kept fighting as hard as we could, and they just got the best of us."

Bell came up with some big pressures on Saenz, including a sack.

Chapel Hill took the lead in the first quarter with an 80-yard drive on just four plays, the big plays coming from Saenz to Onwuzu for a 62-yard connection.

Later, on first and goal from the 16, Saenz found Tre Allen for a score with 6:42 remaining.

The Bulldogs actually took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter after Saenz and Allen connected again, this time for a 24-yard scoring pass.

But with 3:22 left before halftime, senior quarterback Tyler Ince found Johnican on a slant play down the middle that went for 72 yards. Johnican made it all the way to the 6-yard line until being caught from behind by a Bulldog defender, but instead of tackling him, the defender pushed Johnican further into the end zone and the lead was cut in half, 14-7.

"I just saw him open and I just reacted to it," Ince said. "I thought our offensive line had a great game and they held their ground pretty good and I had time to throw on my throws."

It took the Roughnecks one play into the third period to tie the game when Floyd Bess burst through the right side untouched and raced down the field 67 yards for a score.

The Columbia defense gave up 128 passing yards to Saenz in the first half, but held him to just 37 in the second half until the last drive of the game. On that last drive, Saenz accounted for 77 passing yards and his third passing touchdown of the game.

"We had it, we had it," was all Broderick Thomas could say at the end. "It just got away from us and things just happen is all I can say. We should have won, we should have had it, but it's OK though."

Chapel Hill (14-0) will meet Alvarado in the Division I championship at Cowboy Stadium on Friday. Alvarado defeated last year's defending state champ Henderson 34-13. Columbia finishes 13-1.

"This team has been awesome," Surovik said. "They have so much character and they came together and it really felt like a family. This is what makes it tough because they wanted to win and knew they could win and they were that close."
