LV is a steady team. Nothing flashy in either half's really. The offense goes as the RB Grubb goes. Shut him down, you'll control the game.

Post game coverage from the Houston Chronicle.

Columbia rolls past La Vernia, into state semis
By JASON McDANIEL, For the Chronicle
Published 09:22 p.m., Friday, November 25, 2011

West Columbia quarterback Treylon Johnican (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fhighschool&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=) did his heavy lifting on the first play Friday at Berry Center (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fhighschool&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=), keeping for a 70-yard touchdown 24 seconds into the game.
He let the defense take over from there.
La Vernia had 93 total yards at halftime and didn't score until Johnican, who also plays safety, kicker and punter, was resting a bruised thigh late in the fourth quarter of Columbia's 28-7 victory.
"I was worried whether we were flat or whether we were ready, being Thanksgiving and all, but that (first play) opened the door, got everybody excited, got their adrenaline going and united our football team," Columbia coach Leland Surovik (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fhighschool&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=) said.
Now the 13-0 Roughnecks are heading back to the Class 3A Division I state semifinals for the second consecutive season. They'll face Chapel Hill or Navasota, who met late Friday, next week.
They lost 41-14 to Chapel Hill in the state semis last year.
"This is real great," Columbia running back Sean Flannel (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fhighschool&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=) said. "It's an awesome feeling.
"I'm almost kind of speechless. It's really good for all us seniors, who were juniors last year, and got there and wanted to go further, but we couldn't. Now we've got another chance to go and do it."
Flannel took over after Johnican's opening shot, rushing for touchdowns in the second and third quarters and finishing with 104 yards on 21 carries. Columbia scored one TD in each quarter.
Johnican had 96 yards on six carries. He was just 0-of-4 passing with his first interception, all in the first half, but the Roughnecks didn't need to throw to pound upstart La Vernia (7-6) into submission.
They had 335 yards on 48 rushes, averaging 7.0 yards per carry.
"La Vernia is a good football team and they were getting better," Surovik said. "They were young and they got better and better every week, and I told them they were going to be a good challenge and we were going to have to play up to our potential, otherwise it was going to be one heck of a football game."
Johnican was hurt on Columbia's first possession of the third. Tyler Ince came in and piloted the rest of the 13-play (all runs), 63-yard scoring drive that chewed up nearly 7 minutes and iced the game.
Ince was the starting quarterback until injuring his knee in the first half against Wharton in Columbia's second district game. He returned for the playoff opener but Surovik said he's still limited.
He didn't attempt a pass but notched a 3-yard touchdown run.
"If he has to step in, or when he steps in, he brings that calm, confident aspect of it," Surovik said.
Ince doesn't play safety, so while Johnican – who briefly returned on offense – was out, the Bears finally completed a long pass, setting up Aaron Grubb (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fhighschool&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=)'s short TD run with 3:16 left in the game.
They finished with 218 total yards and 12 first downs.
"The defense was very upset about that last score," Surovik said. "They didn't want to allow them to score. With Treylon, our safety, going down, it put us in a little pickle there, having to switch people around, and we blew some coverages, but that's part of football.
"Everybody's trying to win."

First off, congrat's to the bears for a successful and surprising season. Grubb was definately everything i expected to see. He definately has all the tools that makes for a good athlete. Those boys went further than most thought they would, due to compassion for the game and perseverence. LV is a classy team and deserve recognition for their accomplishments this season.
As for our roughnecks, way to go boys. Way to drop the hammer and keep the pressure on the entire game. I want to commend Treylon for his selfless giving of 100% in every game. I cringe when i see him go in the air to score or go to make a big hit or go flying at the sidelines to push a guy out of bounds. It's not just his talent that impresses me, it's also his compassion for the game and for his team. He is willing to lay it all on the line for "Columbia" as a whole. But, one superior athlete does not complete a team and that's what makes a difference in this team. Well done by the defense to hold LV to almost nothing. Good job by the offensive backs as well who all had a great nite carrying the pigskin and thank god for ince to be able to come in and take over when we needed him. Last but not least, I'd like to extend some thanks to the coaches who have obviously put in a lot of hard work this season to get these boys prepared. Now, all of you get your butts to work on a plan to get to Dallas. Lol

Congrats to Columbia. Very talented, determined, and well-coached team you guys have. Good luck next week.On behalf of all the Roughneck family...Thank you LVBF. Your Bears should hold their heads high because they made sure that every play was contested in that game. And looks like you guys are VERY young which holds a lot of promise for the future of the program. Now we may not meet up again for awhile because rumor has it we will be in R3 but....all I have to say is watch out R4...here come 'da Bears.
