You do obviously have a reading comprehension problem. The bus is going to watch all the games whether Gonzales is there or not (this might be the part you didn't comprehend). They are going to watch some great football games for the fun of it, you know, because they like football. I believe the bus is owned by someone who lives in Gonzales and he organizes trips all over the place just to let people go see things they wouldn't normally get to see. Way to read too much into it. You know what they say happens when you ASSUME?

Well...perhaps the D-Train will get rolling on Friday. Here are some highlights from first 5 games last year before he broke his foot. He had a little bit better O-line however, IMO, These 5 games include a solid Cuero team, a solid Sealy team, and La Vernia.

He is the kind receiver that is very difficult to keep from getting separation, which greatly assists the team to keep the chains moving. Many times it is his unspectacular receptions from a highlight standpoint which keep those drives moving on 3rd down. He is the one of the fieriest competitors that I have ever seen and would not be surprised to see him on defense if struggles occur.

No, no...he had played big time up until last half of 7th game. He missed last two regular season games and 1st playoff game. If he is in 1st playoff game it likely would have been a 3 TD swing. He would have made some plays on D that would have denied points and probably adds another TD on offense. He is a guy that keeps chains moving. Of course, all speculation...who knows for sure?
The kid did miss the 1st 8 games of his junior season due to internal injuries to several organs as a result of a freak collision with a teammate in a scrimmage. He was one of 2 DB's converging on a WR and they had a a weird collision. He came back in 8th game last year. He then tore it up in playoffs and you could ask Llano, Cuero, Sweeny and Navarro if they thought that he could ball. Heck...he even made some positive impact on Coldspring and that was a truly nasty, nasty defense.
he is an emotional leader of team as well.
Now I am hearing that the Gonzales safety is a great baller himself...and that is coming from players that have watched film.

All true statements. He is our #1 threat when healthy...behind our QB. But I guess I am saying on Defense, he is an interception threat everytime the ball is thrown his way, and he is fast enough to chase down just about anyone. He "completes" our defense, with all th eother talent we have on it.

No doubt on completing our defense but man we could have used a few of his chain moving catches in 2nd half of Taylor game. I am taking nothing away from Burttschell who had at least three great catches...2 td's and a 45 yd gain..or Alana who had TD catch and a couple of other nice catches...or Holliman who caught a nice go route for good gain. BB just has that pesky knack of getting open. He also has the best hands I have ever seen. He has one D1 program flirting with him an possibly one more. Would be a have to be Wes Welker type. However, he is that cerebral. He is not physically imposing for sure. In fact, in his street clothes he is nothing to look at but he is much faster than he appears and a whole lot stronger than he appears and very tough. Can you tell I am a fan. On top of that he has had offer to play baseball. Loves foosball though!!

If I read something like this about a team I hadn't seen, I'd think it was garbage. 3 TDs? Yeah right...

GONZALES - Gonzales' defensive schemes have complicated opponents, but its philosophy is a simple one.
"We want a shutout every game," said defensive back Jon Anthony Casares. "That's what we want."
The Apaches have gotten what they wanted five times this season and three other times they've limited opponents to nine points or less en route to their first 11-win season since 1963.
"It's been a lot of fun, but a lot of hard work while we're having fun," Casares said. "We've got eight or nine seniors and we've all been together since seventh or eighth grade. Knowing it's our senior year and knowing this is the last time most of us are going to play football we're playing with all our heart and everything we've got."
Gonzales (11-0) will face its toughest test this season when it squares off against No. 2 Wimberley (11-0) in a Class 3A, Division II area playoff Friday at 7:30 p.m. at New Braunfels Canyon.
"The big thing about Wimberley is their tradition and also they're so balanced on offense," said Gonzales defensive coordinator Lanny Wilson. "They've been in big games before and they've got really good skill players."
The Texans have scored a total of 410 points, while passing for 1,752 yards and rushing for 1,628 yards.
Brady Lambert has passed for 1,646 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 266 yards and five TDs.
"They have tremendous skill kids," said Gonzales head coach Ricky Lock. "I think they're good all away around, but I think their skill kids are better than most 3A school kids."
Gonzales has played defense better than most teams, especially against the run.
The Apaches have yielded a total of 456 yards or less than 50 yards per game.
"Running backs don't like to get hit by us," said linebacker Landon Lock. "We do hitting drills every practice and we get after it 100 percent and it helps us out when we get into the game. Nobody wants to get into a hitting contest with us."
Gonzales has given up 1,076 passing yards, but it's also intercepted 17 passes, including 10 by Casares, who had two in the Apaches' 21-10 bi-district win over Hondo.
"We have some really good players and I think when you start stopping people or getting ahead of them, you make people start taking chances that they otherwise wouldn't take," Wilson said. "When they start running high-risk type of plays, the turnovers come with that."
Wimberley opened the season with a 34-6 win over Cuero, while Gonzales closed out District 28-3A play with a 28-0 win over the Gobblers.
The Texans have been ranked in the state poll all season. Gonzales never got more than seven votes, giving the Apaches all the incentive they need.
"After you play this many games, you're not intimidated," Ricky Lock said. "We've got a pretty mature bunch. We're the underdog and we'll play that role."
NOTES: Gonzales will be the home team ... The Wimberley-Gonzales game is one of three in the state matching undefeated teams ... ... Wimberley running back Trinity Wilson has rushed for 778 yards and 11 touchdowns and has 272 receiving yards and five touchdowns...Lineman Cody Jurek said there's no secret for Gonzales' success. "We're hard working and a good group that knows how to play football."... The Gonzales-Wimberley winner will advance to regional against the winner of Saturday's Sweeny-Rio Hondo game at 6 p.m. in Sinton.

I really have no clue as to how this game is going to play out. Wimberley will definitely be the favorite, but strange things happen in high school football. the poll is a great thing for Gonzo. Taylor had no votes in the poll last week and took Wimbo to 2 OT's. No disrespect to WT of course!
Well, wimbo_pro, what started out as a fairly even poll has now stretched to 2-1 in favor of the Texans(which is by far the most skewed poll on DL this week). I think even you are surprised by this result. Looks to me like Gonzo is the overwhelming 'underdog' in the minds of our voters here. No disrespect to Gonzo, I'm sure, but last week's close call has had little effect on the vote. We are all anxious to see what kind of team Gonzo 'really' has. Beating SA like they did must not have swayed many votes. I still think them boys from Gonzales are ready for WAR this Friday, and that's exactly what the Texans will get. Not making any predictions here, so good luck to both teams in this one. Remember, I grew up in Goliad, so you know my sentiments lie with Texas history. Looks like Wimberley will have to "Come and take it" if they dare to win.

I have no problem giving kudos when a team does well. I have seen deep play off runs several times...one last year, one the year before...not to mention our championship run and the year afterwards where we went to the regional finals. I can tell you, Lombardi, since you HAVENT been in such deep runs anytime recently, that Taylor team was VERY GOOD. Surprised us all...big time. I dont care what their record was...holy crap....you have no idea the fight we had. Watch the game film of the game they had with US and then tell me they we average. Eh, I think this is a nightmare matchup for Wimberley. Opponent has a big physical line and just pounds the ball...where have I seen that before? Plus, the best defense in the region. That's a horrible combination for us.

It is true that their strengths are right in the areas of our weaknesses, and its not the best match up for us on paper. But we have other things going for us too, if we exploit them. Versatile offensive scheme that can change in a flash, the best defense they have faced all year, we have recently been battle-tested and they have not...and experience. Thats the big one...experience. We have been in such games at higher levels and know how to do it. Coaching will have a lot to do with this game. All in all, I would rather have our strengths (along wiht our weaknesses) as opposed to their weaknesses (even though they have strengths). Afterall...it IS the play offs.

Ok...ok...for gosh's sakes...uncle...you are right...Taylor is not a good team...WHS just sucks despite their 10-0 record...Lampasas who was in a slug fest with them the week before giving up 50 points also sucks despite their 10-1 record...Salado with their 5-5 record who the Ducks played 2 weeks before just sucks cuz they gave up 56 points.
No excuses...WHS has just not been that good...not sure how they have achieved their success this year. Smoke and mirrors I guess. Probably no way they can match up with potent defense and physical run game of Gonzo. Hey everyone has to lose sometime! no excuses.
Gonzo defense has been LIGHTS out this year. no doubt. Based on all opinions I am hearing Gonzo will present the biggest challenge we have faced. However, I will throw out a little back at you...for discussion sake...
what in the SAM HECK was your EXCUSE for giving up 9 points and only scoring 14 points against a previously anemic La Vernia team. I believe posters have taken the position that LV got a lot better at the end of the year and how tough they really are blah di blah di blah... so here are the options for consideration: either they DID get better despite early poor showings (by the way our theory on Taylor Ducks); Gonzo is over rated (your theory on us); or Gonzo just had an off night... right....cuz that LV team got stomped by WHS, Giddings, and even Cuero for peat's sake.
I am really, really not dissing LV. Heck they are still playing...but the bottom line is they either got better and finished the season strong as we contend Taylor did or they are also just an average team and Gonzo is held in high esteem by virture of playing average competition...or possibly just maybe Gonzo had an off night against LV!!!!
Which is it Lombardi? Huh? Was it a good LV team despite earlier problems, or an average LV team making Gonzo over rated? Or a Gonzo team that is every bit as good as its record that simply had an off night due to any variety of factors. What is your assessment?
We choose to commend Taylor for their successes at the end of a difficult season, for playing for a share of district championship the week before and for becoming a potent offense threat as the season wore on. No excuses...just pointing out to nay sayers that it is possible that Taylor was under rated. Could WHS have played better....you bet! Frankly I was concerned that we did not put up more points earlier. One of those nights. By the way...I personally have decided to accept all the posts that said LV had a dramatic turn around...I am just asking you if you think the posters were making EXCUSES for Gonzo in that situation or not?
Can WHS be beat...again for the umpteenth time...you bet...Gonzo is either the real deal or over hyped...WHS is either the real deal or over hyped...or both are somewhere in the middle. Hey...but it is commonly held that "D" wins championships and you seem confident that your "O" will not have any problems with WHS "D" so WHS is probably the actual under dog in this game.
Just one more thing...WHS "D" could have shut out Cuero...could have shut out La Vernia, could have shut out Navarro, and could have held Boerne to 3 points. Several of the other games would have been one score games accept that by 4th qtr games were out of hand and reserves were playing. With all that said...Gonzo is probably a little bit better defense by virture of the reported talent they have in secondary at this time of season. WHS has dealt with injuries to that unit. However, I will not concede that the Gonzo front 7 to 8 are better than WHS. We have great LB's accross the board and very solid to down right good D-linemen. Although a senior starting DT was out for Taylor game and will likely be out for this one. I might have to make that concession on front 7 or 8 after the game and will be glad to do so

Like I've said 100 times. If you take that Taylor game into account and assume WT isn't that good, based on the results---- your way off base IMO.
Don't take a rocket scientist, to see who WT has played this year, and came away undefeated in all those games, to see WT is very much the real deal.
As is GZ, regardless to scores in prior games. Can't someone just have a bad night? Or, their opponent just had a awesome night?

Absolutely...I was felt compelled to respond to Vince's speech about EXCUSES!!! Bad games happen to all teams in all sports...some days nothing seems to go easy and other days everything seems to go perfect...and any person who has really competed knows that it just happens. That is why going undefeated is to be respected!!! I know for sure that the WHS kids respect the Gonzales team.

Great crowd from Gonzales. I think the home side of the stadium was nearly filled from end to end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this football game. Got to admit tho that the red field really did give me a headache. Not nearly as bad of one as the Wimberley "D" gave us tho. I thought on several occassions that Casares or Johnson were off to the end zone when a hand would reach up and grab a foot or the back of a jersey. Seemed like they just needed one more step on more than one occassion.
Texans made the Apaches pay for every mistake they made while I don't think the Texans made any. Looked like they played a pretty near perfect game. There were no fumbles by either team and the only turnover I remember was the one when Gonzales went to the passing game to try to catch up. Led to a relatively easy td for you on that short field.
I don't think anyone there believes that either team left anything in the dressing room. Both teams were heavily engaged right up to the end. I have got to say that Smith is a hoss. Gonna make the Aggies a good running back.
Thought the Apache "D" controlled the line of scrimmage pretty well most of the night. Just couldn't get to that qb with enough pressure to make him misfire. He made some great throws and gotta say some of your guys went up and got the ball on more than one occassion.
Td right before half was huge. Apache d did a great job of stopping you on your first possession after the half.
Watching the two bands perform together at half time was really uplifting as well. Looked like both bands were enjoying it.
Congratulations to you, Texans. You've got a great ball club and we'll be rooting for you to bring home a state championship. I think you are very capable of it.

All of these playoff games are so much about match ups on a given night. I did not realize that a Gonzales has smallish very quick and very fast backs. Wimberley happens to have very quick D-line and linebackers and that often played to Texans advantage in this match up. Once we got GZ behind the chains they went to Casares passing and he got swarmed many times. He also had his share of impressive plays and success. He converted two 4th and longgggggs to keep scoring drives alive!!!! Was it routine for him to play QB. It seemed like GZ had a kid who could really spin the ball and I was worried about that after your first drive. Who completed pass to goal line on first drive?
At any rate, I agree with you that your guys were seemingly always a step away from breaking really big plays!!! Conversely, Blakemore made really spectacular plays in first half to either keep chains moving or score and that provided cushion. Gonzales probably wore down from their defense being on field longer than normal. It was easy to see why they dominated most offenses. WHS was just clicking in the passing game. Lambert is quietly a very good QB. I will say that WHS has a talented stable of RB's and Cameron Morris has now been elevated to stable status. That kid had a nice game in his limited time on offense, defense and special teams. TD saving play on KO return.
The score was 27-14 at the 6 minute mark of 4th. WHS scored 2 more TD's on screen passes on 4th down. So not reflective of how good Gonzales played but at same time got to give it to diverse whs offense. GOnzales has a good thing going in its football program!!!

Congrats GZ on a awesome season. And WT, best of luck continuing on.
My key to this game were:
1.) WT holding GZ from scoring on that KO return down to the 20 or so in the 2nd I think. GZ ended up going backwards from there.
2.) Blakemore. Kid is amazing and that TD he scored with no time on the clock was the back breaker IMO. Kid can not be tackled when he's determined to score.
3.) Screen pass WT ran with 6 min remaining on 4th down, and GZ down just 2 scores. Well executed.

Maybe. Probably. But that was mainly for Lombardi:
They were so good! They only lost 8 games!! Congrats to wt and the 7 other schools that beat them!,
Well Gontex I've been reading this wimberley crap all week about how good taylor is and then I see some film on them and they are very average. Never seen a very good 3-8 team.
I will say this -- Gonzales should have studied the Taylor game film a little more. I couldn't believe they tried to pass as much as they did in the first half. At halftime, I walked over to the restrooms and found about 50 guys in line, so I walked over to the Gonzales side and there were only about 20 guys in line, but all of them were complaining about all the passing. I was feeling lucky to be up 13-7 going into half, and then Blakemore got loose -- that was the killer.
Great atmosphere at the game. I obviously couldn't tell how full our side was, but Gonzales brought the whole town.
And great coverage by the Gonzales paper: http://www.gonzalescannon.com/node/7378

Good article. However, it was Hunter Burttschell that made the 4th down catch and the 1st TD catch. He is #6 and Smith is #5. Numbers sort of look alike from a distance. Just saying cuz those plays were huge in game.

The Texans played very physical as well, which appeared hard on those smallish skills players of Apaches. In addition, hats off to O-line as they scrapped with a very talented Gonzales front and started opening holes as the 2nd half wore on. I think Gonzales had several players going both ways and wore down due to being on field on defense longer than usual. I am betting that they had a lot of 3 and outs this year. WHS plays kids both ways as well but the coaches rotate a lot...sort of mixing and matching...that particular talent of the coaches has always amazed me!
I also thought that the Texans' RB's did establish that they were tough runners in early going even when the Apaches were stopping them with swarming defense. Despite being cut down several times for limited gains...both Trint Wilson and Dennis Smith showed a physicality in their running styles when all seemed lost that sent a bit of a message that WHS is indeed a hard nosed football team.
Alden Mann had a great game from ILB position. How many times did it look those speedsters from Gonzales were about to turn the corner and get loose when out of no where a heat seeking missile appeared in the form of # 52. Fonville flushed QB several times to Mann, Kothman, Guidry, Kelley...it was not uncommon to see Casares holding ball and then starting his water bug routine with 3 Texans closing at warp speed. Of course he had his plays as well.
Aside from a couple of passes in early going...the Secondary must have been on the receivers because Casares did not get that many passes off actually. By teh way....Cameron Morris broke on a ball in pass defense later in the game when Casares had moved to WR...what a closing burst...for some reason he did not play DB this year but sure seems like he has the raw talent...recall INT in Sealy game.
Also some great hits in game...Kolby Kelley both on offense and defense, Dennis Smith, Blake Guidry, Alden Mann, Davis Holliman. Finally...some great downfield blocking on a couple of those big TD's. Smith did it twice I believe. He got an amazingly athletic block in space to give Blakemore path to end zone on final play of half. As Blakemore was almost to goal line in highlights Burttschell and Holliman come roaring into picture...a lot of skills players way down field gettign blocks or trying to get them.

We are a different team with Blakemore playing, kid is unbelievable. He has the ability to make a big play anytime he touches the ball and plays with a lot of intensity, has to be one of, if not the best receiver in 3A. Great team effort tonite, really like how we utilized different guys on offense in the run game and spread the ball around to different backs and it opened up the passing game and allowed us to make big plays. D stepped up and made stops in critical times, something we couldnt do last week. We needed this type of performance and win after last week and if we put performances like this together each week we will be tough to beat. Dont know if any team can stop our offense when they are clicking like that, just too many weapons.

And good luck to your team next year, Stands With Confidence. Your boys put up a hell of a fight. Great program...you can just feel the power of the teams spirit and the crowds support. As I asked earlier, what does next year look like regarding returning starters? You have the beginning of a good run, I think. Wimbo, we will have some rebuilding next year, do return the 3 soph lineman, guards and center, so that helps, a couple of the running backs. On D graduate 2 lineman, both insided backers and 3 D backs. Have a few kids that played off the bench with the good year and had a good 1 loss JV and 2 loss Frosh teams, so we will compete in district well. Who knows after that. Great game by Texans, and a lot of folks said we were 1 dimensional, heck that is what we ran all year, smashmouth football and hope the other team didn't want 4 quarters of it. Wimberly did a great job of spreading the field and keeping our defense spread as well. Created some really good one on one sits. I really believe both teams left it all out there and it truly was a great game to watch even though the headline doesn't seem that way. Good luck the rest of the way and look forward to your march for the state crown.

Apache78...so true, the score does not reflect the intensity of that game, for more than 3 Quarters. Gonzales is for real, and sounds like they will be fine next year. Glad to hear it, you guys have something to build on. Good luck!

Congrats to Wimberley on the W and a chance to advance. Congrats to Gonzales on a great season.
I look forward to following the WHS 2011 story the rest of the way.....after our game last night with Coldspring, I think you may get past them this year. I will fill you later!
TejasTrue - Thanks for the HeeHaw clip post. That post was very telling....just that the mere fact that you knew that clip existed and could find it changed my perspective about you........I always took you Hill Country dwellers as goat ropers and dude ranch cowboys, but I never thought yall were actual hillbillies or fans thereof........twanga-twang-dang-dang!

Gonzales fans, we feel your pain. Good team home early. It takes a measure of luck to make the big dance, and this year, the blue ribbon team was in the way. Best of luck next year and good Luck to Wimberley. Now, we're rooting for Region IV. Let's go earn some respect.

To be honest Manso..I was not raised in the country but was raised on country. My granddad (Daddy Pat) was a ramrod on a ranch in Boyd, Tx many years back...although he died when I was fairly young..you just don't forget the special things...never tried the urban cowboy route..just have an appreciation for the simple things of country living...and yes..believe it or not..there are quite a few hard working farm and ranch people in this area with calloused hands and weathered brows..
As far as the Hee Haw thing..family never missed it...for me (at that time) it was all about the girls and an occassional appearance from Conway Twitty, Marty Robbins etc..
Look forward to your Coldspring game comments...

It's all good. Born, bred, or led.....country is a choice, state of mind, and attitude. I know yall have a lot of hard working farm and ranch folks out that way, some folks from around here run some cattle out there too. I don't know anybody from that era whose family didn't gather 'round the telervision to watch Hee Haw each week.....those Hee Haw honies where a big draw for me.......but you can keep LuLu all for yourself!
I will try to post something about the Coldspring game in the next day or so.....the short version is, they have many athletes, play FAST, and make a ton of mistakes.....thought we were going to get by them for a while, we had 'em worried!

Very well said Gontex......Not to drag this thread out too long but just had to post this video with our two bands on the field at haltime and at the same time. I don't recall ever seeing this before. Very special and they did indeed have some fun with it...

Dang, I'm sure that was good, but I missed it. As soon as I started the video, I automatically got up, went to the bathroom, and then went to the kitchen and got a sausage wrap and something to drink. When I got back to my computer, the bands were walking off and video ended.

Just when I thought there was a legitimate reason to like you Manso you just screw it up..My daughter was a part of the Texan band last year and knows (and is friends) with quite a few of the band members in this video. Unfortunately I see, you just don't get the overall picture...am I surprised...no, not really.

I am so sorry. I didn't take you for a sensitive band or football parent. It wasn't a comment on the bands, or bands in general, just goofing on my normal half-time routine. I actually watched the video (still have to pee) and enjoyed it, congratulations to your daughter and her friends.....honestly I did not enjoy it as much as the Brookshire Royal band this year which shivered the Bellville crowd with some borderline and over the line gyrations......the drum major's crotch grab is still talked about around old lady dominoe tables. Again, accept my sincerest (whatever that means) apology.....you know it is hard for me to suppress my smart aleck side. I am disappointed that you didn't at least find a little humor in my post.......I'll go back out and talk to my cows.

Just giving you a hard time Manso. I posted the video to share a little love for the band(s). They are a big part of the atmosphere of the game and yet for the most part go unappreciated. Now the crotch grab...that particular thing just doesn't fly :D around here. Say hello to your cows for me...
