Say I'm an assistant coach, and my team is playing a school where I used to coach.

I hear a rumor that the star player from my old team, our opponent, is hurt and will not play tonight.

Is it right or wrong for me to text that player and ask him if he is playing?

Yes it is wrong.

You don't work there anymore so anything other than Good Luck is inappropriate,

Even "good luck" could be inappropriate. The player could respond with "I'm injured" and then if it comes up it could be said that you were fishing for info.

Personally I don't think it's appropriate for a coach/teacher anything to have a cell phone number of an individual kid. A parent may be okay, but a teacher/child, I think is a big no no unless it's a relative.
