Columbia's biggest weakness is size. Every team we've played this year who had any size at all and would come right at us, gave us problems. We've been able to force turnovers and get be stops when it counted.

Necks were starting to get it together there in the 2nd qt defensively. I'm expecting Columbia to come out and put this game away in the 2nd half.

C'mon Necks! We've gotta play better all the way around. Mental mistakes cost us a big run and a big punt return from Treylon.

Good season RF. Great job Necks! Time to find out if we play Raymondville or LaGrulla.

One thing I always remember about Raymondville is that they tend to swarm to the ball. They may not be the fastest or biggest but they do play with alot of heart.

RF needed to play turnover free to have a chance, the fumble at the 4 yd line was a big setback, nice hit on the rb as he was falling down jar the ball out.

Columbia showed it can be a pretty good passing team, the passes were ok but the recievers made some great catches. Good luck next week Columbia and great effort Rockport Fulton ya'll represented well.

I saw some of La Grulla this year. Speed is not an asset. A decent RB and one good Slot Receiver. Raymondville should win though. They play tough, no real standouts. Neck's should advance if they TCB.Raymondville plays two games, one on the field and one on the sideline. That team is jeckyle and hyde. They have fans trying to force the coach out and players fighting with each other on the sideline but they somehow still win games with all the distractions.

La Grulla does look slow but have a bit of size.

Hats off to the whole Rockport group. Played their a$$es off and never gave up. I will say we didn't play good assignment defense at first but did better the second half. I give RF a lot of credit for pushing past our defense early on. I think all of us including the players under-estimated this team. Very good sportmanship and a lot of heart coming from those guys. JUST STOPPING BY: Bess, ’Necks handle business in romp over Rockport-Fulton
Posted: Friday, November 11, 2011 2:00 am
By JOEL LUNA

VICTORIA —For some reason, Floyd Bess and Memorial Stadium just go hand in hand.
The Columbia junior led his team with three touchdowns and the Roughnecks defeated Rockport-Fulton, 34-15, Thursday night in a Class 3A Division I bi-district contest.
"He's done some things here, and he did exactly what we asked him to do," Columbia coach Leland Surovik said of Bess. "He made some plays, but shoot there were a whole lot of good plays out on the field tonight."

Bess collected seven carries in the first half for 132 yards, but none sweeter than his first one of the ball game.

Taking a handoff from Treylon Johnican on an end-around, Bess cut right through the Pirate defense on his way to a 70-yard touchdown. After Johnican's extra point, the game was tied 7-7.

It was a year ago when Bess also pulled off the same thing against Corpus Christi Miller at Memorial Stadium in the area round - except it was a 63-yard romp on his first carry of the game.

Though it was a quick start for the Roughneck offense, not much else happened until right before halftime. With 5:48 left before intermission, the 'Necks took over at their own 29-yard line. Eight plays later, it was Bess again. He shot straight up the middle as would-be tacklers could not get ahold of him.

After a 28-yard touchdown, Columbia went into the locker room with a 14-7 lead.

But the Roughnecks had a tough time with the Pirates' running game as Isiah Mendiola ripped them for 82 yards on 13 carries in the first half.

Halftime helped Columbia get things in order defensively.

"We basically were not lining up right, doing the things we were supposed to be doing," Surovik said. "They were catching us off guard, doing quick huddles and they changed their tendencies. I think we just needed to settle down and play. I told them at halftime, we need to be doing what we are accustomed to doing and not do anything special. That is exactly what we did because we ran what defense was called, and we played a lot better."

It showed, because there were some vicious hits in the second half, most of them coming from the 'Necks. One of those was from defensive back Kevin Brown on Rockport's Temple Tai, as the Pirates ran a reverse.

Brown tatooed Tai for a 1-yard loss.

They also held the Pirate offense to 46 yards on a couple of series in the third period.

Meanwhile, Johnican got the passing game going in the third, as the 'Necks faced a fourth and 22 from the Rockport 37-yard line. Johnican, who is also the punter, faked the punt and hit Bess on the sideline. The shifty tailback juked two defenders along the way into the end zone. Columbia opened up a 24-7 advantage and didn't look back.

"Sometimes, this first one is tough, and playing with everyone's emotions. Some of these players didn't know how to act, but once they settled down, they played well," Surovik said. "It was a slow start for us, but we got a win and that is all that counts. It was a hard win to come by, but it was a big one for us."

Johnican, who didn't complete a pass in the first half, was 3-for-5 in the second half for 91 yards and two touchdowns. He also had field goals of 39 and 32 yards as the Roughneck offense gained 379 yards on the night.

Next up is the winner of Raymondville and Rio Grande La Grulla, who face off today in Rio Grande City.

"We don't know what team, but we are going to be playing Friday night in Calallen," Surovik said.
