Yeah we went into a prevent and they hit on a big pass play. We did just get a pick though. Willis Johnson.

That would be a classic rematch. Last year Sinton was a perfect 10-0 and lost to you guys first round. I know the Sinton Pirates would love to take back our colors... ;)

Gotta love the idea of "paybacks"! :)

Roughnecks dominate rival to complete perfect regular season

WEST COLUMBIA — The Columbia Roughnecks accomplished a lot Friday night after beating their cross-county rival Sweeny 31-12.
The Roughnecks (10-0, 4-0) clinched the outright District 29-3A title for the second straight year.
They also secured their first undefeated regular season since 1987 and won their 19th straight regular season game.

They also earned their first week off of the season before the playoffs start in two weeks.

"I'm proud of them," Columbia coach Leland Surovik said. "They played hard all year long. The defense stepped up and the offense did what they had to do."

For Sweeny (5-4, 1-2), the loss means it will have to win its final game against Needville next week to get into the playoffs.

"It's win or go home," Sweeny coach Brett Sawyer said. "The playoffs start for us this week. It's win and we get in."

The state-ranked Roughnecks jumped out to a 17-0 lead before the Bulldogs could respond in the second half.

"They are a good football team," Sawyer said of Columbia. "They have a lot of good athletes, have a lot speed and play with a lot of heart."

Columbia took a 7-0 lead with 2:50 left in the first quarter when running back Sean Flannel capped a 64-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run.

The touchdown jaunt was part of another 100-yard night for Flannel, who rushed for 107 yards on a night when yardage was hard to come by.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Columbia's Adam Fellers set up the Roughnecks' next score when he recovered a mishandled punt snap at the Bulldog 7 with 47 seconds left in the opening period.

Sweeny's defense stiffened and the Roughnecks had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Treylon Johnican with 11:02 left in the second quarter.

Five-minutes later, the Roughnecks extended their lead to 17-0 when Johnican capped another 64-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge with 6:02 left in the first half.

A 44-yard pass from Johnican to Ricky Wilson and a 15-yard personal foul penalty by the Bulldogs were key moments on the drive.

Sweeny didn't give up. On the opening kickoff of the second half, the Bulldogs recovered a Columbia fumble at the Roughneck 36.

It wasn't long before Sweeny quarterback Dorland Fields pushed his way into the end zone from a yard out to leave Sweeny down 17-6 with 8:27 left in the third quarter.

Columbia's Kevin Brown blocked the extra point.

"I was proud of our kids," Sawyer said. "They fought to the end."

The Roughnecks responded right away.

On their next possession, Columbia drove 61 yards to paydirt with Brown catching a 31-yard touchdown pass from Johnican with 3:28 left in the third to put Columbia up 24-6.

"That was big for us," Surovik said. "We responded on offense and then our defense responded."

The Roughnecks finished their scoring with 5:04 left and Flannel scored his second touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run.

Gary Woodard caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jake Rayburn with 4:20 left in the game for Sweeny.
