Treylon has run the ball ok. Completed his only pass attempt. Pretty much Flannel and Bess all night.

I'd like to see the stats on this one. Any ints for the defense?

No picks. Believe Palacios has attempted 3 passes. One fumble recovery though.

Solid victory tonight. Especially considering we started a new QB tonight

PALACIOS — Columbia’s first game without starting quarterback Tyler Ince didn’t feature much passing, but that’s not because the Roughnecks couldn’t do it.
Palacios just couldn’t stop the run — at all.

Using a powerful, quick ground attack to rack up 417 yards and six touchdowns, the ’Necks literally ran over, through and around Palacios en route to a 48-3 victory in District 29-3A action Friday at Shark Stadium.

Floyd Bess led Columbia with 174 yards on just nine carries, and Sean Flannel had 12 rushes for 122 yards — each scored three touchdowns.

That type of performance took a lot of pressure off quarterback Treylon Johnican, who stepped in for injured starter Tyler Ince after he tore his meniscus against Wharton last week.

“That makes it easy for him,” Columbia coach Leland Surovik said of the potent run game. “All he had to do was get the snap and hand it off to them.”

Johnican finished with seven carries for 69 yards and completed his only pass for 12 yards.

But more important than any stat, Johnican gained a little confidence with the win.

“It was real nice,” he said of having Flannel and Bess working well with the offensive line. “I wasn’t under pressure and didn’t have to worry about anything, just go out there and play football.”

Johnican said he would’ve liked to throw the ball more, but he understood the coaches taking him out late in the fourth quarter with the win in hand.

Surovik already knows he can chunk it, though.

“Treylon can throw the ball, there’s no doubt about it,” Surovik said. “He can play quarterback. The biggest thing was getting something under his belt so he’s confident in what he’s doing.”

That was accomplished by the second quarter.

The Roughnecks (4-0 in District 29-3A, 9-0 overall) led 28-0 at halftime after pounding the Sharks for 289 yards and four touchdowns.

Columbia didn’t throw the ball once, scoring on all four of its opening drives.

Meanwhile, defensively the ’Necks were a brick wall, allowing just 38 total yards and forcing three Palacios punts. By the end of the game, the Sharks had only 110 rushing yards on 41 carries — an average of 2.7 yards per carry.

“They’ve been playing well all year, causing turnovers and we gotta continue to do that,” Surovik said. “We gotta swarm to the football.”

The opening drive of the game went 76 yards on nine plays and chewed up almost 4 minutes of clock before Flannel busted into the end zone for a 3-yard score. He had six carries for 50 yards during the possession.

Columbia went ahead 14-0 with 1:22 left in the first quarter when Bess charged through the defense and broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown.

After the Sharks gained only 15 yards on their next drive, they punted again. Columbia started the drive with an 18-yard run from Johnican. Four plays later, Flannel rumbled 40 yards for his second score of the night and a 21-0 lead with 4:56 remaining in the half.

Then on third-and-five from the 25-yard line, Columbia’s Justin Hussey shot through the offensive line and sacked Palacios quarterback Anthony Garcia for a 2-yard loss. The Sharks then punted the ball 1 yard on fourth down.

Columbia only needed three plays to punch it in, as Bess swept to his left and cut back up field for an 11-yard touchdown and 28-0 lead with 1:29 until halftime.

The ‘Necks kept it going in the third quarter, with Flannel ending the opening drive with a 12-yard touchdown for a 34-0 lead. Then on the first play of Palacios’ next possession, Seth Garcia fumbled and Jerry Cotten fell on it for Columbia.

Bess sprinted 22 yards seconds later and Marquise Myles scored an 11-yard touchdown to put Columbia ahead 41-0. Palacios turned it over on downs shortly after, and Bess made them pay.

He swept to his left, and with a group of Sharks taking a bad angle, Bess burned them to the corner for a 47-yard touchdown and 48-0 lead.

Jesus Hernandez booted a 30-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to break up Columbia’s shut out.

The Roughnecks will play Sweeny next week before getting a bye to prepare for the playoffs.
