Bess is fast. On both those TD runs, I didn't even know what was happening until he was in the endzone.

Good win but IMO it was kinda of an ugly game. Our blocking was horrible at times and what bothers me the most is we let them score. As for as Ince, I hated to see him get banged up like that after bringing the team this far and hope he is ok to come back soon. The 2nd half I'm not so sure we just didn't go into preservastion mode to close out the game. Also hated to see Willis agrevate his ankle injury. Bess can lay them down can't he.

Defensively, the Necks would bend but not break for most of the game. Those two scores by Wharton were just as you described. Seemed like we were just trying to get out of there. Injury wise, I'm hearing a hyperextended knee for Ince and Willis may be dealing with that ankle for the rest of the season.

Where did we gets those Refs from? The back judge had to be the oldest ref i've ever seen.

I heard the score was 23-0 at halftime from the radio report I got-I'm surprised that Necks scored only two touchdowns in the second half and Wharton scored two-Presume Columbia stiill dominated this game Roughneck totaled up 435 yards and Wharton had 273. Tigers should bounce back to beat winless Needville next week in Wharton. Tigers are open Oct. 28 and then play at Palaicios on Nov. 4. If the Tigers win out they will make the playoffs

WEST COLUMBIA — State-ranked Columbia kept its unbeaten train on track Friday night by whizzing past visiting Wharton to the tune of 36-13 in a District 29-3A showdown.
"I am just so proud of the kids," coach Leland Surovik said. "We did what we had to do tonight and put away a team which is better than its record might indicate."
Wharton (1-1, 2-6) came in flying high after a district opening win against Sweeny last week and was able to hold the Roughnecks to a scoreless tie after one quarter of play.

The Tigers used a brilliant 25-yard run by scrambling quarterback Bartee Grissom to gain a first down at the 'Neck 15 as the first quarter ended. However, the swarming Roughneck defense dug in and eventually took over on downs at its own 14-yard line.

On the first play, the speedy 'Necks got the Tiger defense going one way while junior Floyd Bess was going the other. The swift Bess took the delayed handoff from quarterback Tyler Inceand streaked 83 untouched yards to draw first blood. Treylon Johnican nailed the extra point and the 'Necks were up 7-0 with 10:11 left in the first quarter.

Columbia used a bit more early Halloween trickery moments later when Johnican faked a punt and threw a perfect 53-yard touchdown pass to Keenan Brown with 3:10 remaining in the first half.

Moments later, the 'Necks cashed in on a safety as a snap sailed over the Tiger punter's head, and he eventually was nailed in the end zone to make it 16-0.

Columbia (2-0, 8-0) wasn't finished.

The 'Necks took the short kick after the safety and immediately marched 45 yards for another score, with senior running back Sean Flannel doing the honors from 3 yards out with 48 seconds remaining in the half.

However, it turned out to be a costly drive for the 'Necks as Ince had to be helped off the field.

"We are hoping it is not serious," Surovik said. "We will know more tomorrow when he goes in for testing."

Johnican helped finish the last drive before the half with a neat 20-yard run down to the 5-yard line to set up Flannel's first of two touchdown runs on the night.

The Roughnecks, who travel to Palacios next Friday night, came out smoking in the third quarter. Flannel capped a time-consuming drive with a 10-yard trot to paydirt with 6:11 left in the third stanza. Flannel, who motored for 133 yards on 22 carries for the night, carried the ball eight times for 65 yards in the opening drive of the half.

Wharton finally put numbers up on its side of the board thanks to a dandy 73-yard pass from Grissom to Demetrius Peacock, which put the ball on the Columbia 10. Peacock did the honors moments later on a 9-yard bolt to the end zone.

Columbia countered quickly as Bess busted straight up Wharton's defensive gut and bolted 87 yards for what turned out to be the 'Necks final score of the night. Bess only had one more run on the night, a 4-yard scamper in the fourth quarter, as he finished with a game-high 174 yards on three carries.

Columbia finished with 344 yards rushing and another 106 passing in the runaway victory, while Wharton closed out with 177 yards rushing (only 37 in the first half) and 101 yards passing, with the 73-yard pass play being the only completion of the second half.

Wharton tacked on a meaningless touchdown with 2:18 left in the contest when Grissom scampered home from 4 yards out.
