MINERAL WELLS, Texas - A teen football player from Community Christian School of Mineral Wells collapsed on the field with a head injury during this past Friday’s game against Azle Christian.

Head coach Doug Jefferson said he was at first baffled by 17-year-old running back Robby Mounce’s injury – a brain bleed that was exacerbated by a helmet-to-helmet hit.

“It wasn’t until basically the blood in his head was building and pushed his brain that he began to scream. It wasn’t even one of those immediate things. It was, is Robby okay? He doesn’t look okay. What’s up? Then we go out and he starts screaming in pain,” Jefferson said.

Trainers quickly ruled out a concussion, but they knew something was terribly wrong and so did everyone attending the game.

“Both sidelines, Azle fans and all Mineral Wells fans, bowed in prayer. The football teams were circled in prayer. The cheerleaders, every head was bowed praying for this young man,” Jefferson said.

Mounce was airlifted to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth where he has since undergone surgery. He is still in and out of consciousness and on a ventilator but his family said there have been signs of progress.

“Robby’s dad was holding his hand during a prayer and Robby gripped his dad’s hand really strong, showing some movement,” Jefferson said.

The coach said besides the teen’s athletic talent he is academically ranked first in his senior class.
