Both Columbia and Needville have had their share of off years, but that was the weakest Needville team I've seen in all the years we've played.

Maybe Roark saw the writing on the wall.

I thought the same thing. That program seems to be way down. I think it was obvious weeks ago that this is the weakest team needville has fielded in 20 years

Has anyone heard how that young man is yet? Prayers go out to him and his family.

Being as I hadn't seen them play, it wasn't as obvious to me until Friday night.

Roughnecks roll Needville, stay unbeaten

NEEDVILLE — The Columbia Roughnecks opened District 29-3A play with a 56-0 win against Needville on Friday night at Bluejay Stadium.
Columbia (1-0, 7-0) stayed unbeaten as it got production from different players in the showdown with the Bluejays.
“We had a lot of things go our way tonight and they are still trying to find their own way,” Columbia coach Leland Surovik said. “Our kids played extremely well and, like I said, turnovers and other things just went our way.”

The Roughnecks put up a pair of touchdowns in each of the first two quarters to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.

Despite that lead, they did not stop scoring, getting three more touchdowns in the third quarter, including a 73-yard punt return from Treylon Johnican.

Quarterback Tyler Ince finished 5-for-6 passing for 97 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Sean Flannel had 96 yards on 14 carries, including a pair of touchdowns; Floyd Bess added 45 yards on seven carries and a score; Ince had 28 yards on a couple of carries and a touchdown; both Broderick Thomas and Johnican each had 21 yards rushing; and Marquise Myles had a couple of carries for 11 yards and a touchdown.

Thomas also had three receptions for 41 yards and a score; Keenan Brown had a catch for 19 yards; and Kevin Brown had one catch for 37 yards.

“We had a lot of people play tonight and we got to play a complete game,” Surovik said. “It was a great atmosphere for us and a good way to get this team growing together. I thought we played to our potential tonight and was really pleased that we continued playing hard. The guys did not allow their focus to be interrupted by anything tonight. It was a good way for us to start district play.”

Needville fell to 0-1 in district play and 0-7 for the season.

The Roughnecks will return to Griggs Field on Friday to host Wharton.
