Derek McKenzie has the Buckeyes hitting on all cylinders tonight at Buckeye Stadium. He scored on about our third play from scrimmage on a 50-yard run. Shades of Vince Young. He also threw for two or three more TDs and ran for another one.

It was 27-0 by halftime. Gilmer rested star tailback Andrew Hines, who has a high ankle sprain. Jeremy Skinner performed well in his place. Kicker Gerardo Cabrera booted six of seven PATs.

Defense notches first shutout of year. Mount Vernon had some success passing, but couldn't ever get into the red zone. Buckeyes had a "bend, but not break" kind of night on defense.

Mount Vernon (3-3, 0-1) is obviously a bit down from last year, but this was probably Gilmer's best overall performance of the season, especially considering that Hines was out.

Next week Gilmer (6-0, 1-0) goes on the road to face Winnsboro in a key District 11-3A matchup. A distraction for Gilmer will be our annual East Texas Yamboree. School lets out on Thursday and Friday and it is always difficult to keep the young men focused during the carnival atmosphere of this annual fall festival.

Should be a good game in Winnsboro next Friday night. One team will come out of that game a little disappointed.

Good luck to both teams.
