I just found out they were on. They were usually consistently good movies and worth watching. TCM is showing them on Saturdays probably for a limited time only but you can order those you missed from Amazon, Ebay, etc. if you wish or wait till they are shown again. Right now they are showing the Gordon Scott movies and in my opinion he was the best of the Tarzans. Of course many Tarzan fans think Johnny Weismuller was the best others think Scott is but you can't go wrong in your preference. These movies had action and humor and are good. The times may be when you are busy with football so you may want to consider setting your recorders. In my opinion the top three Tarzan movies are showing in October but all are worth watching. They all three have beautiful scenery and are in color.
I present them in reverse order of my preferences.
3. On Oct. 1, 2011 it is Tarzan's Greatest Adventure made in 1959 with Gordon Scott as Tarzan who goes after the men who ransacked a village and murdered some inhabitants. Anthony Quale
is the cruel leader and a young Sean Connerly is one of his men before he became famous as James Bond. A good movie and that swing by Tarzan when he has the woman hanging onto him when he passes within feet of a wide open mouth crockodile is great. Tarzan speaks good English here unlike the other movies which is the way the writer Edgar Rice Burroughs intended which started a trend for most of the future Tarzan movies.
2. On Oct. 8, 2011 it is Tarzan the Magnificient made in 1960 with Gordon Scott again in another outstanding one. Tarzan goes after Jock Mahoney (who also starred as Tarzan in two movies) when Mahoney kills his lawman friend while robbing a bank with his brothers. Tarzan captures Mahoney and has to take him through the jungle to justice and has to contend with Mahoney's evil family and escort other people also. John Carradine plays Mahoney's father. He was the real life father of David and his brothers.
1. On October 22, 2011 they are showing Tarzan's Three Challenges made in 1963 with Jock Mahoney as Tarzan. Tarzan goes to Asia to help a young leader take over the rightful ruler of his kingdom but of course there is someone who wants the throne for himself. This is Woody Strode who play s the opponent and he is outstanding in this movie. Strode not only plays the opponent but also the old dying king in the first part of the movie. The rest of the supporting cast is also good. Jock Mahoney in my opinion is a fair adequate Tarzan but not one of the best. But this one to me was the best one because of great script writing and directing along with a splendid performance by Woody Strode as the villain. Enjoy!
