The most realistic game action of the preseason ended in an unofficial 10-6 win for the Madisonville High School football team Friday.

The Mustang’s running game racked up 121 yards on nine carries against defending Class 2A, Division I state champion Daingerfield in a 20-minute timed scrimmage.

Running back Anthony Manns broke loose on a 67-yard touchdown run, and fullback Colten Long added a 42-yard rumble to set up a 38-yard field goal.

The scrimmage was the final tuneup for the regular season, which begins Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at home against Navasota.

“I think we found out some more things about ourselves,” head coach Greg Morga said. “Two scrimmages tell you a lot about yourself. Overall since last week against Franklin we improved. If you can continue to improve day to day, week to week, you’re doing what you need to be doing.”

Varsity

The varsity squads in Friday’s scrimmage each ran one series of 20 plays, and one series of 12 plays before moving into the 20-minute time scrimmage. During the first two series, each team took possession at its own 30-yard line, and the series reset back to the 30 if the team failed to convert on third down.

Madisonville’s offense scored a touchdown during the 20-play series on a 68-yard run by Manns, and also picked up gains of 11, 14 and 18 yards on the ground. Daingerfield intercepted two Mustang throws during the first series, and Madisonville gained 129 yards on 20 plays for an average of 6.45 yards per play.

Daingerfield scored three touchdowns during its 20-play offensive series, one on a 27-yard run set up by a 56-yard pass, one on a 15-yard pass, and one on a 55-yard pass.

The Tigers rushed 10 times for 102 yards, and completed 5 of 9 pass attempts for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

During Daingerfield’s 20-play series, Long tipped a pass and Madisonville made a successful red zone stand after the Tigers moved the ball to the Mustang’s 10-yard line. On first-and-goal from the 10, Madisonville stuffed the first play for a 1-yard loss and forced three consecutive incomplete passes to stop the scoring threat.

Neither varsity squad scored during their 12-play series, with Madisonville gaining 48 yards on 12 plays and Daingerfield gaining 54 yards on 12 plays.

During the 20-minute timed scrimmage, which mimicked a true game situation with the exception of special teams plays, Manns ran for his 67-yard touchdown on the second play of the opening possession.

Manns’ score was his third rushing touchdown of more than 65 yards during Madisonville’s two scrimmages.

Daingerfield converted passing plays of 17 and 12 yards on the ensuing possession, but the Mustangs recovered a fumble to stop the scoring threat. However, a Daingerfield interception led to a touchdown, bringing the unofficial score to 7-6. The Tigers failed on the extra point try, and Long’s 42-yard run set up the 38-yard field goal to bring the score to 10-6.

Daingerfield marched into Mustang territory on its next possession, however, the 20-minute time limit ended and the scrimmage came to a close.

“We ate a little humble pie in certain areas, but I think our offense progressed and our defense played a little bit better,” Morgan said
