After two weeks of practices, Sweetwater’s football team finally gets to see how it will fare against outside competition when the Mustangs go to Lubbock Cooper today for their first scrimmage of the season.
Freshman and JV skirmishes will begin at 6 p.m., setting the stage for the varsity scrimmage at 7:30 p.m.
Sweetwater head coach Craig Slaughter said the format calls for the No. 1 units on offense and defense to get in 30 plays each tonight while the No. 2 units will run 20 plays apiece.
Slaughter admitted that the scrimmage will be a good test for his players because Lubbock Cooper is among the top Class 3A teams in Texas. “Our No. 1 goal is to see a different level of execution and play physical defense,” he said.
“We want out No. 1 unit to score. Lubbock Cooper will be an extremely good club, but we expect a good level of execution and intensity,” he continued.
“It will be very good preparation for when we start district play and give us an idea of what kind of competition we’ll see.”
Slaughter said his team is almost at full strength for the scrimmage, though two players are out until the regular season begins for disciplinary reasons. He also said that practices have gone well and the intense heat has not caused problems, noting “our trainers have done a great job.”
The team recently added two players to its roster, including Tadeo Canon-Masjoan, a junior who is a move-in from Argentina. He began on Wednesday and, Slaughter said, may provide a huge lift to Sweetwater’s kicking game with his strong leg. In addition, Albert Leija, who was forced to miss all of the 2010 season due to health concerns, has been cleared to play his senior season, the coach said.

Thanks Phantom for not only posting the link, but cut and pasting the story. :)

One thing the story doesn't mention is that the Argentinian is 6'3" and 220 lbs. Rumor is that he will play D-line once he's been coached up some.

How in the heck does an Argentinian even end up in Sweetwater?

Actually, I just remembered, an Argentine company built a high voltage breaker (used in substations) manufacturing plant in Sweetwater last year.

Here's a flashback video showing Mustang highlights from 2001-2010. It's about 8 minutes long. But, worth the watch if you're a Sweetwater fan. FYI - the year of each highlight is in the bottom left hand corner od the screen.

I'm surprised Sweetwater has 8 minutes worth of highlights from 2001-2010, are there any from that game against Early last year?

WOODROW — While his team’s execution wasn’t as crisp as he’d hoped and the No. 1 unit failed to get into the end zone, Sweetwater head football coach Craig Slaughter was also encouraged by much of what he saw in the Mustangs’ season-opening scrimmage with Lubbock Cooper as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw on Friday.
And the final result was clearly much better than in 2010 when Lubbock Cooper dominated the teams’ scrimmage at Sweetwater, winning by a 4-0 count.
“We’re pretty pleased,” Slaughter said, noting Coo-per played its starters most of the way Friday and has seven returning starters on both sides of the ball after advancing to the Class 3A quarterfinals last season.
“I thought it was a very good step in the right direc-tion. This will help us get ready for the games ahead.”
Still, he admitted there is plenty of room for improvement as Sweetwater — despite out-gaining Cooper 310-234 — hit paydirt just once and wasted good op-portunities to score on its first two series. The defense, though, didn’t allow a score until late in the scrimmage.
The Mustangs’ only tally was rather spectacular — a 70-yard burst by sophomore running back Marquees Jenkins, who had a team-high 110 yards on just eight carries while playing with both offensive units.
No. 1 quarterback Taylor Jones had a solid passing night (7-of-11 for 70 yards) and also was effective run-ning the ball with 27 yards on four carries, while Ryan Linebaugh ran for 38 yards on 10 carries and Adrian Lopez, Bobby Soto, Cole Maxwell and Kaleb Hoover, the No. 2 quarterback, also had nice runs. On the receiving end, Linebaugh and Gabriel Medellin each had two catches while Sean Morrow, Jenkins, Nate Hardin and Willie Norman had one. Linebaugh also had an interception on defense.
Sweetwater started off by driving from its 30 to Cooper’s 26 before an in-terception ended the threat. The Mustangs then drove all the way to Cooper’s 13, the No. 1 unit’s deepest penetration of the night, before Jones was stopped on a fourth-down run. Cooper moved to Sweetwater’s 25 on its opening series before the Mustang defense held, and didn’t threaten again until scoring its touchdown on a 13-play drive against Sweetwater’s No. 1 unit. The No. 2 defense kept Cooper from scoring after getting to Sweetwater’s 3-yard line.

Well, our Argentinian looks legit.

Sweetwater and Lakeview played a live half tonight and he nailed two XPs and split the uprights on a 37 yard FG with four seconds left.

Now we just have to wait and see how he does when he's being rushed next week.

Controlled scrimmage ended with both 1st teams scoring. Sweetwater on a long 70 yard drive and LV on a long pass. it ended 1-1

The live half was 17-0 Sweetwater and LV never threatened.

The Mustangs looked pretty good.....but Lakeview is not a very good 4A team. In my opinion, Sweetwater should be much better than they have the past couple of years..let's hope it shows in the next few weeks. Oh yea, the kid from Argentina has a leg on him....that field goal would have been good from 50 yards. It will be fun to watch him make the move from soccer and rugby to American football.
