Probably a neutral site....

My guess would be waco or something and I bet its going to be broadcasted on the Longhorn Network because UT is interesting in Brooks(if he is still going to be in Rockdale) and James David! Its a conspiracy man!!!!

So what happened to La Vernia?

Matthew328
07-21-2011, 04:25 PM
That game was cancelled about a month ago...LaVernia's supt. cancelled didnt want them travelling that far I could swore I posted it...they replaced Wylie with a Week 4 game against Bandera (much closer to home)

Pendragon13

Last year it was a neutral site roughly halfway (Waco) and I thought this year Wylie was actually travelling to La Vernia? At least the GoFridayNight.com website still shows it as an away game for Wylie..and the location as Bear stadium.

Abilene to Waco is 184 miles, Abilene to Rockdale is 231 so Waco wouldn't be much of a choice for a neutral site. The most neutral is Hamilton but they don't have facilities (115 miles and 116 miles for each team). Brownwood is 75-80 miles from Abilene and 168 miles from Rockdale. Stephenville is 107 from Abilene and 155 from Rockdale. Brownwood is home for zero week though, I don't know if Stephenville is home or not zero week.

look a little south of Brownwood and you may have a good spot for a neutral site...maybe 183 and 190?

Lampasas? I didn't include them mainly because their facilities aren't very good... but then I looked at what Rockdale plays in and it seats more than Rockdale.

I was through there spring break, I think they have a new high school on the south side of town, but I don't remember if there was a new stadium near it or not. According to Texas Bob, they are still in the old one.

Lampassas-
they do have a stadium at the new school but the last time I was through there i don't remember if there was pressbox on that stadium...there were bleachers on both sides.......but not anything really big..........might as well just drive on down to Marble Falls that s a really nice stadium and the pressbox does have an elevator.

Looks like Glen Rose might be an option - 135 miles from Rockdale and 137 from Abilene. If a two-year deal, maybe Brownwood one year and Lampasas the other?

It won't be a 2 year deal since next year is realignment year. La Vernia broke the contract, which doesn't happen very often.

This is a rarity...apparently the supt at La Vernia told the HC he couldnt play the game..thus the reason they scheduled Bandera in Week 4...much closer to home than Belton...

Lampasas did build a new school and football field , but they did not put enough stands for a track meet let alone a football game. No pressbox either. They do
play baseball on their new field , but still play football on the old downtown hole in the ground. And just in case you are wondering , they have made NO improvements
to that thing in the last 100 years or so...........

Doubtful that this one will be much of a game even if Wylie is still rebuilding. Rockdale lost too much, and they weren't too great last year anyway.

Why a 6:00 kickoff? Is it not hot enough at 7:30 they pushed it back to 6?

Sounds like when we played Odessa Permian my junior year of high school. It was in Odessa on a Saturday afternoon (I think kickoff was at 1 or 2) and it was week 2. There were some band and drill team members that had to be treated for heat exhaustion. Thank goodness we were visitors and wore solid white, Odessa was in solid black.

With the buget crunch , I am sure Rockdale ISD would not allow the football team to travel that far for a non District game. I know La Grange would definitely not allow it to happen and most schools in our area would not be allowed. Welcome to the real world, money wise.

Let's see, who might have a bigger Athletic budget Wylie or Rockdale. Think we all know who that might be, I know our athletic budget was cut 50 percent for this year and there would be no way we would be allowed to travel that far for non District game. Believe what you want but money played into that decision.

Money did play a role in that Rockdale was not going to play unless it was at home...if it had been a two year deal they would have met a neutral site..because Rockdale lost a home game they were the ones dictating the terms

Exactly. We were already planning to travel a good distance for week zero and Rockdale was planning to be home. Believe it or not, hooknladder, the budget crunches have affected everyone. If you can find some closer opponents for Wylie, please share your wisdom. Lots of hours are put into scheduling games, and that's WITHOUT a team backing out. (LV basically backed out of travel two years in a row). Not to mention that a 5 team district makes it that much harder to fill the schedule. It's not that easy, but give it a shot and let us know what you come up with please.

Exactly. We were already planning to travel a good distance for week zero and Rockdale was planning to be home. Believe it or not, hooknladder, the budget crunches have affected everyone. Not knocking Wylie at all, just stating Rockdale just like us would not have funds to travel that far. Also looking at your facilities compared to ours (Rockdale and La Grange) I would bet your athletic budget is much larger then ours. You need to come see our Football satdium and you would understand what I am talking about, Thank goodness the stadium does not make the team if you know what i mean.

Athletic facilites don't come out of the athletic budget, they come from bond funds generally. Wylie ISD taxpayers voted for the bonds for facility improvements, they did not come out of the athletic budget.

You don't have to have huge athletic budgets to have nice stadiums. Stadiums are pretty much paid for with bond elections or surpluses in general. Our remodeling was done by raising over a million dollars in private donations. I'm not sure how Wylie financed their recent remodel of their stadium.

Thanks for the explanation, but comparing facilities in no way translates to comparing athletic budgets.

Understand completely, just stating even with a bond there has to be money budgeted for athletic improvements. We had a bond election last year that included athletic improvements that did not pass, now trying a bond without athletic improvements. Football stadium is pretty much an embarrassment and will remain that way til who knows when, new coaches have made some improvements to fieldhouse and weight room however other then the field the stadium is just bad.Now our Baseball and Softball fields are super great, our new Super. had them built 3 years ago with school money.

You'd be surprised... the reason Wylie may have a lot larger athletic budget would only be true if they have a lot larger budget in general due to enrollment. School budgets are mainly set by enrollment (which Wylie does have an advantage on). Once the state pays your school district, I don't remember the exact number but I want to say over 80% of that money is generally used for salaries of teachers, administrators, custodians, bus drivers, etc. The little remaining money is split up among everything else (athletic budgets, food service, maintenance, etc). Athletic budgets make up a very small piece of the pie, now where they might get you is money generated off of athletic event attendance. Remember though, that larger budget is going to provide for a larger number of kids, the $$$ per kid shouldn't vary too much. Every district has taken a huge cut this year, you can thank Governor Good Hair for that.

I'd also be willing to bet in addition to all the extra revenue generated from large crowds, Wylie has probably has a very active booster club that I am sure generates additional funds for the athletic dept

So see....if you want to equate facilities with athletic budgets, this kinda puts a whole in your theory.

Brownwood did when I was in school, even at the junior high level. The school district I work in now does as well, although it's started getting that the money spent is less and less per meal... infact some subvarsity teams were given brown paper bag meals from our school cafeteria last year

When I was in school we only got a meal paid for if the road trip was over 75 miles and for tournaments and playoffs...that was it

That is how it is in the district I am in now (not sure if it has to be 75 miles but it has to be a decent trip for subvarsity to be fed). Brownwood doesn't play anyone within 75 miles other than Stephenville (60 miles) and Wylie (70-75 miles).

Not that long ago we played Clyde in our district before they renovated their facilities...if any 3A school was in worse shape then I'm not aware of it. Visiting fans had to bring folding camp chairs because the band literally took up more than half of the visitor stands and the home side wasn't much bigger. In any case, once the action starts on the field none of that other stuff really matters..

If you ever decide to come to LG for a football game and sit on the home side, you may want to bring rubber boots and a rain coat so when you go to the rest room you won't get to wet from drinks from the stands. I feel sorry for the women using our restrooms, Wow.
