FOX Sports Southwest will offer live webcasts of this week’s FOX Sports Southwest 7-on-7 state tournament Division I quarterfinal, semifinal, consolation and championship games from Texas A&M on Saturday, July 16. The internet broadcasts will be carried on FoxSportsSouthwest.com and FoxSportsHouston.com.

The 14th annual tournament presented by adidas and Academy Sports & Outdoors begins on Thursday, July 14. Defending state champions Lake Travis (Division I) and Brownwood (Division II) are among the 128 teams that qualified to compete in the three-day event that features the top passing high school teams in Texas.

Division II (Classes 1A-3A schools) pool play kicks off the tournament on Thursday at noon CT on Texas A&M’s Penberthy Intramural Fields, while Division I (Classes 4A-5A) gets underway on Friday at 1:00 p.m. CT

Saturday’s webcast coverage begins at 11:45 a.m. CT. Quarterfinal and semifinal games will be streamed in a multi-game format with full screen action split between the simultaneous games.

Jeff Power will host the quarterfinal and semifinal game webcasts. Scout.com reporters Greg Powers, Brandon Huffman, Scott Kennedy, Ahmard Vital and Steve Robertson will handle play-by-play duties with Erin Hartigan serving as the sideline reporter. Jeff Power (play-by-play), Michael Silvers (analyst) and Hartigan (sideline reporter) will call the consolation and championship games from Kyle Field.

Neil Beasley, host of FOX Sports Southwest’s HIGH SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT weekly show, and a team of Scout.com analysts will provide daily updates and game recaps on FoxSportsSouthwest.com and FoxSportsHouston.com. Nightly tournament recaps also will be televised on the networks’ Texas Rangers and Houston Astros postgame shows.

FOX Sports Southwest and FOX Sports Houston will televise a 30-minute UNDER THE LIGHTS recap show on Monday, Aug. 1 at 10:30 p.m. CT and a special 7-on-7 edition of HIGH SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT on Sunday, July 24 and noon CT.

Did Bandera pull the starters early to conserve energy and let Gilmer start a comeback?
or did Gilmer just make a full blown comeback?

Gilmer made a full blown comeback.

Bandera needed that win. Now they are 0-2 in pool play which is last out of the 4teams.

A Bandera win would of meant all four teams had 1-1 records. Winners of game 3 would of went to championship bracket and losers went to consolation bracket.

Bad news about consolation bracket is that it starts up after pool play.

Graduated 1981. I'm thinking the newspaper was/is owned by the Wilkerson family.

Funny story. I was once sitting in my cubecle at work in Waco, dialed directory assistance, and asked for "the phone number for The Comanche Chief" (I wanted the phone number of the newspaper). A few minutes later, I felt the eyeballs of 4 coworkes peering over the top to see if I was off my rocker.

Yeah, that's them. Lance Wilkerson is my uncle. He married my aunt on my Dad's side of the family.

A funny story of my own, I was part of their wedding and as a wedding gift they gave me a Swiss Army knife, I was 7. I remember them telling me that they felt I was responsible enough to have it and that I could handle it without hurting myself. That same night, I sliced my thumb pretty bad with the scissors part of it.

Refs helped Gilmer back in this one, ticky tack interference calls giving them the ball at 1 twice and a new set of downs. wouldn't let them play defense! got to love the hail mary, droped it over two defenders and kid made hellofa catch. definatly wanted it.

07-15-2011, 06:44 PM
Well if that's the case then the powerhouse 3a teams or the top 25 are not gonna be very good. I don't see how 7on7 can be any indication on how the real season will be. Carthage hasn't won a 7on7 title or done all that well yet they have 3 state titles in the last 3 years. Gilmer hasn't done anything in 7on7 in a few years and they are always good and making deep runs. Chaple Hill got knocked in this tourney and I don't remember them or Henderson doing anything in 7on7 last year. Argyle hasn't done well in 7on7 and they got knocked out early. Then Celina who won the 7on7 title in 09 had the worst year in the regular season in over 20 years and then we get knocked out in the 1st game of the championship round this morning. So I would say 7on7 has no bearing on the regular season.

you are correct. Celina sucked last year in7 on 7 and they sucked in the fall too.. They sucked this year in 7 on 7 so they might as well skip football season and work on cheering for the softball team all year.... Just messing with you.. I think 7 on 7 does show if you have the talent to do certain things in the fall but without lineman, that 7 on 7 talent means nothing... Which brings me to another subject.. I wish they had some event at each 7 on 7 tournament that the lineman could be doing... I dont care if it's pushing a tire up a hill, I would just like to see something for the big boys too.

Liberty Hill won 3 titles in a row and don't even throw the ball so they would have been awful at 7on7. I think 7on7 can give you a good idea about your skilled position players and how good they might be. Celina performed poorly in this tournament but they still have some very good skilled players. So if there is a correlation between 7on7 and the regular season then what I said is right and the top 25 teams will not be very good.

Although 7 on 7 can give some insight into the success of a football team it is not the only indicator or even the biggest indicator. When it all comes down to it, to be successful
you have to be able to do two things. Run the ball and stop the run. Neither of those
things can be determined watching 7 on 7.

Melissa will be really, really good in football this year. They lost in the playoffs to a tough Grandview team last year, and they return everyone except their senior running back. They are going to be stout.

I just dont buy the 7on7 succsess there are way to many different things that happen in a real football game like hitting, tackling, running defensive pressure and blocking. To say that Melissa would beat Celina, Gilmer, Brownwood or Chaple Hill in a regular game is retarded. I know its last year but Celina beat Melissa in the regular season by 40 points and Celina will be way better this year than last year. 7on7 is a fun game and I enjoy watching it but its touch football. Put the pads on and throw the linemen in there and you got a completly different ball game, I can assure you Melissa, Godly, Kincade and some of the others that had a good showing would get destroyed by the 4 teams mentioned above.

Anyone care about DI today? If so let me know and Ill post updates..

Both brackets are going on right now... Then I believe after this round FSSW will be streaming alot. Matt said cameras are everywhere.

I care, but I already know what happened. :(
There was some personal irony involved in that.

Tyler Lee still playing.. Now thats the scary thought. They have also been without Wallace the entire tournament.

REL hasn't had quite the same road that Cujo has. Besides, losing to the a likely 5a state champion and a possible 5a regional finalist isn't too shabby. We've gotta build some consistancy. When we're rolling, buddy we ARE ROLLING. But on a bad day...
I figure with 3 consecutive top 15 5a teams to start the season off, we'll be battle-tested(or battle-fatigued) in no time!

I'm not saying you take results from 7 on 7 and say ohh Melissa won it all so therefore they'd beat Celina or Gilmer. What I AM saying is Melissa's success this weekend is a strong indicator they will have a successful fall. The results recently speak for themselves, doing well at 7 on 7 is an indicator normally of fall success.

Bob, are you the coach? I couldn't believe the Gilmer Qb even threw the ball. I would've had our Qb take 4 seconds and run out the clock. It was dang sure a sweet ending though. Exciting as heck.

I do not think the coach knew the time...they knew it was short but...I have not got the insde as to why...but a 17 year old QB in the State Playoffs, 100+ deg., mighty Brownwood (heck, we can't let Carthage have all the fun), up by 6, on a roll...Champ in sight...why not live on the edge and throw a pass to give the Lions a chance? I know Luke was crushed but such is the game...there is always next year. Luke is a great kid (dad is asst. coach) and he is going to have a bevey of receivers to toss to...gonna be fun. A good game Lions...and a tough bunch of fans...not a canopy in use...but your guys kept on plugging away.
