All I am going to say at this point is get ready 3A. Brownwood has reloaded. The third season under Coach Shipley and Company will be another dominant season. This is not schtick. This is truth.

I told you people when we dropped that Brownwood isn't a joke. This is the season the Lions really prove it (as if last season wasn't enough). And hopefully we get to smash Celina's mouth up proving it.

Brownwood is a Top 3 3A. Just wait...

Thank you, thank you, thank you Rocket for coming back. The speed from the East will be waiting for you again. I loved that ball game, it was the two best teams in D2. Rocket nothing has changed in the last ten years, you have to go through East Texas to win the ring. This year will be no different.

A Carthage coach told me offensively they will have far more athleticism, but not near the experience. Defensively they will be sound, but losing Thompson in the middle will be the hardest to replace. I think the rematch could be.

Depends on how far you want to break down "down". 2011 Lions will be a different team than 2010 Lions. Obvioulsy you can't replace a Jaxon. But there are several key players coming back in addition to some other great talent you all will be aware of in the near future. :)

Carthage got lucky the clock ran out in 2008 against Gilmer.

Gilmer got lucky when Carthage opted to throw on 1st and goal (2yd line) it was 24-7 at the time....Gilmer picked it off. 14pt swing. D. Smith would've easily scored against that Buckeye defense. Gilmer also got lucky when Carthage when Carthage fumbled late on the goal line (31-21).

Carthage dominated that game. It was the few turnovers that kept Gilmer in the game at all. It could've easily been a blowout.

Anyone that has yet to see them even practice has little knowledge of what they'll be. They had great team chemistry to go along with talent. they may be far more talented this year (i seriously doubt that), but they have to mesh as a team.

Hmmmm.......did Gilmer not turn the ball over in that game? I'll admit Carthage dominated that game for the most part, but Gilmer finally got some stops in that second half and made a comeback. They got within three points, and actually had a chance with under a minute to go to win. That's moxey on the Buckeyes' part. Are y'all saying that Coach Surratt made a bad call? The coach that got them THREE straight state championships? Carthage would NOT have three-peated had they met Gilmer again in '09. Gilmer would've beaten the Dawgs soundly that year, so Carthage was DEFINITELY the team that got lucky in '09. Gilmer and Cuero both would've spanked them in my opinion.

No, what's really funny is how cocky you Carthage fans are. You beat two DIFFERENT Buckeye teams in a span of three years and you think that means that you have somebody's number. There is absolutely NO WAY the Buckeyes would've lost to Carthage, or anybody else for that matter, in '09. The senior-led Buckeyes had a bead on your Dawgs in '09, and the matchup didn't happen due to some other teams not getting it done. Talk about luck! No big deal, the Buckeyes won it all anyway.

It's Class B and a tie, that should really be half of a half.

Make the tally 7.25:taunt: Using your math it is still greater than 7 fossils. :taunt:

[QUOTE=bobcat1;1591905]LMAO Schedules had been made and budgets exceeded. We were open and would have welcomed Brownwood to our home stadium but they wanted no part of that is my opinion.:QUOTE]

Read that outloud and see what part of it does not sound like and excuse. Bobcat1, you are a good guy. I know you have more championships than us and more current ones also but I also know we were willing to do a home and home with you guy and y'all declined. Think about it, you tell me "last year was last year" but you have me championships in the past than us.. are we talking about the past or present, I am good either way, just make up your mind. By the way, I am not going to get in a pissing match with you over this, I respect Celina, i am just calling a spade a spade. I really only know what I was told. I was not listening to the conversation on speakerphone so no I really don't know. I do know schools have budgets for travel expenses for sports. Once met they are usually not exceeded. I don't have firsthand knowledge of a home and home and wonder if you do.

I was just pokin' with a stick in your ribcage to see how far I could make you jump. All in fun and I also respect Brownwood and their successes. :)

Hollywood-
The difference between the 09 and 2010 Bulldogs was going from one of the largest senior classes with a lot of playmakers directly to one of the smallest with just a few. Last years team was one of the youngest in recent memory...in other words, in 08 there was only one Soph on varsity (Joe Nasser) and none in 09....yet there was about 8-10 on last years team and many of them contributed. The leading receiver is returning. and the QB is a big kid with a strong arm. Sandifer always surprises me by filling in the unknowns quite well, and adapting the playbook to match the players he has. I'll reserve final judgement until after the first 3 games or so...another meatgrinder schedule this year.

edit- I'm not the best one to ask about this since I've been out of town quite a bit in the last few months and haven't really talked to any insiders..

There are so many areas to respond to in this thread that it is ridiculous. First off, Brownwood may end up being ok at the end of the season and battling it out for the third spot in this district, but there are not enough pieces in place for them to be ranked in the top 25 of the
state to begin the year, much less the top 5 as some have suggested. Shipley was not the
only player lost off of last years team. On offense they only return 3 starters (1RB and 2OL) On defense they only return 2 (1CB and 1 OLB). If the OLB plays QB this year then they
only have 1 guy back on defense. That is a lot to lose for any team. Surely teams can
reload from year to year, but those teams that reload typically have strong junior varsity
and freshman teams. Last year, both sub varsities for brownwood were subpar so reloading the preverbal gun this year will be increasingly difficult with not as many bullets to choose
from. There are 17 starters spots to fill. Many on here predict great things from this year's
squad due to the wonderful coaching staff that is in place and they are great coaches. Thereare other great coaches and staffs in this district however that have won a state
championship. Those men, are the facts and until some other facts are thrown out there by the brownwood faithful that is what we have to go on. Therefore, I will take Wylie and
coach Sandifer to outperform the Lions this year. The bulldogs may have to rebuild a bit this year but have more bullets in the gun to do so with due to the strength of their sub varsities.

I understand your point but did want to address the returning starters. Yes there are few returning, but something little know is how many backups played significant amounts of time because of some lengthy and nagging injuries. We also have a few move ins that will make an impact very sooner than later.

I've never put a lot of weight on sub-varsity scheduled wins because many teams have their players already up in varsity even if only getting limted playing time which is exactly how Brownwood was last year. I think the game with Wylie will be much more competition, but I also think the Lions will find a way to win.

Doc Holliday

I understand about the backups that got a lot of playing time. They may step in and do a great job. They many even extend and help make brownwood great for one more year. Eventually though, those freshman and jv players are your varsity and
will have to be counted on to contribute.

I can assure you Coach isn't going to stop moving kids up to get PT. My point is if a team has an incredible JV team, that probably means many of those kids should of been getting PT with Varsity. I just don't see a lot of weight in sub-varsity for that reason.

Say when.... LOL, you are clueless!! Did ya use all 6 bullets with that shot in the dark analysis? Wylie will be better this season. I believe that, but to say the Lions don't have enough to reload? That's laughable. You can't judge how a sub varsity team performs one year to guess how the varsity will be the next! Yes the Lions lost a lot of talent from last year, but will feel the voids nicely in all positions but Shipley's. NO replacing him. Going to be fun to watch.

Doc Holliday
07-06-2011, 02:26 PM
My point is a very simple one to make. Players very rarely just show up out of no where. Shipley, Longoria, Brown, McShan, etc. were known commodities before their senior year.
Replacing 17 out of 22 starters is a tough task and you would have to figure that some of the
players preparing to fill those voids would have been known about by now whether
they played last year on the jv or as backups on the varsity. People knew who Shipley and
Longoria were before they emerged on the scene. Even if they didn't play jv they were known about as freshman and 8th graders. Point being stud players can be identified before they
make an impact on friday nights and there are not many signs of those types of players
coming up the pipeline.

I understand. That's the beauty of high school football... there's always talent, it's the calibar of the coaching staff that expliots the very best of each individual as a unit, a team that is the most successful. It's really a psychological exploitation if you think about it. Great programs draw great talent... getting the talent to perform at top levels it the key. Shipley is great at it as well as Sandifer and many other top programs around the country. Coach Wood was one of the best.

I'm just stirring the pot hollywood. I went through what Brownwood is going through when the Farmers won the State Title in 07' then graduated 23 seniors off the team. Many, many underclassmen got a lot of playing time during the title run in 07' and the starting QB was a sophomore and the second leading rusher on the team was just a freshman. But losing the 23 seniors was very very hard to overcome. The Farmers went 2 rounds deep the next season (when they moved up to 3A) but could not capture the magic again. Good luck this season in Brownwood getting the magic back.

Maybe this will get things rolling?

This.

Seems to me if they are going to be a bullet this season then they would have been somewhat of a bullet last season.......... Just sayin'!

And every video I saw of Brownwood had their main players in the game in the 4th quarter.

There were a handful of games the starters were in in the 4th, but if they were in to run up scores explain this:

Score by quarter for the season:

Opponents 43 87 34 83
Brownwood 237 266 200 97

Average per game per quarter:

Opponents 2.9 5.8 2.3 5.5
Brownwood 15.8 17.7 13.3 6.5

Most games the starters only played one or two series in the 2nd half. sniderville and the infamous Iowa Park game were exceptions as was some of the closer games like Carthage (of course), and the deeper we got in the playoffs, the longer it seemed the starters played. But... for the most part, the "main players" were not in the game during the 4th quarter

Which fits perfectly into my argument. Lots of kids saw ample playing time last year. It's almost like they are returning starters since they played against the other teams starters for the 2nd half of every game. I'm excited to see what's to come.

To the outsiders looking in it is hard to understand. There where so many younger players that played so much last year. Ill make a prediction right now. We will go either 9-1 or 10-0 in the regular season depending on how the Stephenville game goes. How is that for confident?

Should be right on. Beast is closest to the source. Having said that, Sville game should be a close one... probably will depend on how they play Aledo in week 0 and A Wylie in week 1 and how their QB situation works out. It'll be in their home stadium this year, Tarleton State's Memorial.

Kinda like when you Brownwood folks saw the Pt's allowed for Carthage last season and just assumed the defense was awful. They played alot of young guys when up. Some even played meaningful time, not just when a blowout was happening. I just saw some games where Brownwood was up by 28-30 pts after 3 qtrs and the starters hit the field to start the 4th.

Then he saw some games I did not see.. like I said, the sniderville and the Iowa Park game are the exceptions, other than those, starters seldom played past first or 2nd series of 2nd half... just another hater

I'll be the Debbie Downer from Brownwood. I think we will have a very solid football team again this year but we may not ever replace the talent class we had in 2010. Now, me being in Houston works to my knowledge disadvantage because I'm out of the loop. Last year I knew the names, this year not as much. Being a Brownwood fan we always feel we will be good, that's tradition. I'm a homer no doubt about it but we will have to work very hard to achieve the successes we had last year. Last year everyone knew we were loaded and we played with the target every game. I personally like having the "shock value" lineup that it seems we might have.

I hope the wood peeps don't blast me I'm just trying not to put on my maroon shades for a couple more weeks

I dont think many of us would argue with you, I just dont think we will be as weak as some haters are saying. We will not have the "score at will" talent we had last year but it should be another successfull year for our Lions

Don't worry. They will bring their crickets with them. Their game here in Brownwood last year was thick with crickets.....or maybe we could just hear them since their was no cheering coming from that side of the field.

The cans quietly left the stadium pretty early in that game... then the crickets erupted. Expecting another silencing of the cans this season too!

Awesome job on the 5K!

I'll refrain to comment on the latter part of your post unless kitties were free hand outs and the burgundy color and broken neck were results of the sloshing of the merlot from the running. :ack!: If that's the case, then great accompishment!:cheerl:

Clearly Carthage does not need to prove anything to anyone. They are the cream of 3A. Their program has proved it already.

Now it would not surprise me if Brownwood actually finally shows up this season. It looked like they were going to show last season, but it seemed to me that they lacked the championship spirit. Often when a good program moves past the overhyping and finds a good team spirit, they in turn have the success that escaped the previous year's "also rans".

Good luck to Brownwood, I hope they finally shake that Celina shadow. I had a big brother too. It sucks always coming up just short of him.
