Cleve Bryant, the longtime right-hand man to Texas football coach Mack Brown, hasn't been on the university's payroll since March 23, according to records obtained Tuesday by the American-Statesman. It's unclear whether he is still a university employee.

Bryant, associate athletics director for football operations, was the subject of an internal investigation regarding allegations by a female staffer. University officials have refused to say anything about the allegations or the investigation.

UT payroll records obtained by the Statesman under the Texas Public Information Act show that Bryant's most recent base salary was $237,309 a year. He received a $15,000 speaking fee supplement in November and had been in line to receive a $25,000 camp fee this summer.

The records show that he has received no compensation since March 23.

Asked whether he is still a university employee, Annela Lopez — the university's open records coordinator — replied, "I would say no because I see no active appointment."

However, Arthur Johnson, assistant athletics director for football operations, said Bryant is still employed by UT but on leave. Bryant is listed on the university's sports website, mackbrown-texasfootball.com, but he is not listed in the directory of employees and students on the main university website, utexas.edu.

Last October, Bryant's lawyer, Tom Nesbitt, told the American-Statesman that Bryant had taken an administrative leave of absence over the matter. Nesbitt declined to comment Tuesday.

Patti Ohlendorf, the university's vice president for legal affairs, did not respond to a request for clarification as to Bryant's status.

Bryant came to Texas in 1991 as an assistant to coach John Mackovic and left in 1995 to work for Brown at North Carolina. He returned to Austin in 1998 with Brown.

UT lawyer mum on Bryant’s status

The employment status of Cleve Bryant, right-hand man to football coach Mack Brown, is unclear, and the University of Texas doesn’t seem inclined to explain it.

As our story in today’s paper says, records show that Bryant, associate athletics director for football operations, hasn’t been on the university’s payroll since March 23. Two UT officials gave conflicting assessments of whether he remains a university employee.

Responding by email to my inquiry late Tuesday, after deadline, UT’s chief lawyer, Patti Ohlendorf, said: “I am not able to provide at this time any information or clarification on your question about Mr. Bryant. The University is not in a position to provide information nor is anyone authorized to speak regarding the issue for the University.”

yea, it just seemed as if someone was trying to make it go away from the headlines, but to the victims credit, she kept'd on with the complaint. why does texas just admit it either way, he is still employed or not employed. but it does not pass the smell test when their chief lawyer states...“I am not able to provide at this time any information or clarification on your question about Mr. Bryant. The University is not in a position to provide information nor is anyone authorized to speak regarding the issue for the University.”.... well who the he** is able to talk about this, you're the head attorney for the school.

The status of football coach Mack Brown's right-hand man came into sharper focus Thursday with the University of Texas' statement that Cleve Bryant's employment had ended and Bryant's lawyer saying he was fired but is fighting for his job.

"Mr. Bryant is no longer an employee of the university," Patti Ohlendorf, the university's vice president for legal affairs, wrote in an email to the American-Statesman. She said the university had no further comment.

Bryant, who had been associate athletics director for football operations, was the subject of an internal investigation regarding allegations by a female staffer. University officials have refused to say anything about the allegations or the investigation since the matter came to light in October.

Tom Nesbitt, Bryant's lawyer, said his client was terminated in March.

"Cleve Bryant appealed that decision pursuant to university policy" to the school's provost, Nesbitt said. "Our appeal was filed within 10 days of the decision. We requested an immediate hearing.

"Because of the scheduling issues for the university and its legal team, we've been told that a hearing will not be held until mid-August. Cleve Bryant and I believe the termination was unjust, and Cleve will fight for his job."

Nesbitt said he was "not at liberty" to disclose the allegations against Bryant.

Records obtained by the American-Statesman earlier this week under the Texas Public Information Act show that Bryant has not been on the university's payroll since March 23. After university officials gave conflicting accounts about whether he remained an employee, Ohlendorf said late Tuesday that no one was authorized to speak for the university regarding Bryant.

Payroll records show that Bryant's most recent base salary was $237,309 a year. He received a $15,000 speaking fee supplement in November and had been in line to receive a $25,000 camp fee this summer.

Bryant came to Texas in 1991 as an assistant to coach John Mackovic and left in 1995 to work for Brown at North Carolina. He returned to Austin in 1998 with Brown.

Bryant's photograph, biography and title were posted on the staff portion of mackbrown-texasfootball.com , the website for Longhorn football, as recently as early Thursday afternoon, but after the American-Statesman noted that fact in a blog, the photo and information were removed from the site.
