Bowl games that were scheduled for years were played on Monday, January 2 if January 1 was on a Sunday. It has been that way for years.

Another way to tell if January 1 is on a Sunday is to see if January has a Friday the 13th. If a month has a Friday the 13th then you will always have that month's 1st on a Sunday.
