Sinton native Mike Adams has gained notice this season not only for his nearly unhittable work out of the bullpen for the San Diego Padres, but for his neckwear on the mound. The veteran right-hander wears white-gold, navy blue and bright pink necklaces.
The latter is the most emotional for him. Since last year, Adams has worn the pink one to honor his grandmother, Hilda Adams, who passed away last August after cancer spread to her brain during her lengthy illness.
Additionally, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Adams wears pink pins on the neckwear, symbolizing Cleft Palate and Cleft Lip awareness. His 6-month-old son, Kaiden, was born with a cleft lip.
“It’s my way of honoring both of them,” Adams, 32, told the newspaper.
The South Texan, who starred at Texas A&M-Kingsville, is making his mark on the mound in more noticeable ways. He’s off to a career-best start, retiring 42 of the first 45 hitters he faced this season and averaging only 0.8 walks per nine innings.
