Voted for Friday the 13th; however, I think Silence of the Lambs is just as good.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre scared the crap out of me. It was dark the whole friggen time and it literally looked like a snuff film. Of course thinking it was real at the time did not help.

I know that by todays effects and production standards it tends to suffer a little, Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" is still the benchmark.
Great movie AND very scary.

The Excorcist! Seen And will not watch ever again. Every other so-called scary movie puts me to sleep.

The Exorcist is so far above those other "horror comedies" that they shouldn't even be in the same poll..

I agree!

Both were scarier than shiznit! As was the first Evil Dead and Prince of Darkness(the last one I saw in the theater, saw Evil Dead in a big college theater, both places were pitch dark; you couldn't see the person next to you).

Question: Is it just me or are movie theaters more well-lit today than in the 80's and before?

The Exorcist though, as a young Catholic, was the ultimate horror movie. :nerd: :(

Exorcist by far.

But I'm surprised nobody picked a Dracula film. I cant remember the names of any of them, but there were some great ones made in the 60s and 70s, that scared the crap out of me. We used to go watch them at the drive in, then have to drive home, way out in the country. We were too scared to even look back into the back seat.

i think the movies that scare people the most are the ones they saw first in a theatre....so many people today first saw the exorcist or jaws on tnt or tbs and lost its affect....my son told me he found a theatre showing the exorcist in houston and was gonna take his girl to see it, she told me later he didnt last the entire film before wanting to leave, and he had seen it several times on tv before that....

on first run and in the theatre, exorcist first, jaws second....we only need look at the other jaws movies to see how good spielberg was with the first one, he had us so scared we were more afraid of the unknown than we were of the shark....

The original "It's alive" was just traumatic for me. The make-up and the CRY/SCREAM of those babies basically ruled out restful nights for me for a while!! Very scary stuff and to this day I tip my hat to the FX staff of that flick.

Exorcist- When that voice came out of the little girls mouth- freaked me out! I too have NO desire to ever watch it again!

One that I thought about it, and its not even really a horror movie, is the 1980s movie Legend. Being a little kid when I saw that movie, I figured that character was Satan himself, and it was pretty terrifying.

I'm telling you the Alien chest-buster scene was one of the scariest of all time. Most people can't watch it without cringing to this day.

Special effects are not what I consider scary, no matter how well they are done. It's the content and story that I find chilling. The Excorsist Is the scariest movie ever made.

Alien and Event Horizon were two scary movies that did "special effects" the right way as far as Sci/Fi horror is concerned. :nerd:

I saw Alien at the theater with a couple of friends when it came out. It was scary to me, but not because of the great effects. It scared me because of the unknown. The only "special effects" that ever moved me was the Normandy scene in Saving Private Ryan.

For it's time it had awesome "special effects". They were ground-breaking imho. I think it did help to create a scary movie. In other words, the "special effects" complimented the movie and it's scariness; the "effects" didn't dominate the movie like many do now.
That movie was very well written, just like Event Horizon was.

We might be on the same page. SPR... very very "moving".:nerd:

The Creature From the Black Lagoon...without a doubt.

1954 and I was six. I was supposed to be at the Crystal & snuck off with my older cousin to the Strand (I was banned from there by my Momma). I was scared to death...had nightmares & could not tell Momma.

The Exorcist was pretty intense but I think The Ring and maybe the Blair Witch project was a little more hard to watch without turning away. Has anyone ever watched a movie called The Entity? Scary stuff! Almost anything made by Wes Craven is pretty scary...........

Same way with Paronarmal Activity One. When she was dragged out of the bed limp, when she hit her head I busted out laughing. It's very funny looking.

Well, you were probably eleven years old when it came out. I was in my forties.
