Van Students Bring Home UIL State Championships
By RYAN BENDER
Van High School, UIL Academic Coordinator

Each member of Van High School’s state-advancing academic team brought home medals from the University Interscholastic League State Academic Tournament, including three state championships, en route to a second place overall showing in the entirety of conference 3A. The meet, held May 5-7 in Austin on the University of Texas campus, was the 101st in the history of the League.

Sophomore Susannah Wisdom earned one of the state championships in prose interpretation in her first trip to the UIL state meet. The current issues and events team consisting of juniors Forrest Hebron, Nathaniel Hinrichsen, Briana Konzem and Joshua Mashburn also won the team title. Finally, on May 9, Van’s production of William Shakespeare’s classic “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” earned the one-act play state championship.

In addition to the state championships, several other students earned medals in their individual and team events. Placing fourth individually in current issues and events was Hebron. Senior Payton Hall also placed fourth in persuasive extemporaneous speaking, the fourth state medal of her career. (Earlier in the year, Hall and her debate partner, junior Lindsey Kellam, tied for fifth place at the March UIL cross-examination state debate tournament.)

Finally, the social studies team, consisting of juniors Nathaniel Hinrichsen, Briana Konzem and Daniel Palmer, along with senior David Moreman placed second overall, narrowly missing a state championship.

At the UIL State Academic Meet, points are given along with each medal. At the end of the tournament, Van High School earned enough points to take second overall at the entire tournament in conference 3A.
This type of academic success is not uncommon for this particular high school however.

Last year, the academic team also finished second overall by 1.5 points earning a state championship in social studies and winning several other medals in prose interpretation, one-act play, and debate.

The one-act play state championship continues a very rich tradition of success in the Vandal Nation. In the past decade, the theatre group has advanced to state eight times, winning four state championships, one silver medal, three bronze medals, and numerous individual acting awards.

This year, the one-act play cast and crew consisted of: seniors Kelsey Covington, Marianna Gilbert, Brandon Jones and Shyanne Thompson; juniors Ashley Jackson, Caleb Manshack, Grayson McFarlin and Shawn Thompson; sophomores Liz Dunn, Ryan Ordmandy, McCall Sowers, Ryan Williams and Susannah Wisdom; and freshmen Alex Baker, Josh Cole, Conner Covington, Ulises Garcia, Grace Herringnton, Kara Hilton and Weston McFarlin. Thompson (all-star cast), G. McFarlin (all-star cast) and Cole (honorable mention all-star cast) earned individual acting awards at the statement.
Coaches of the state-advancing academic team are: Ryan Bender, Edwin Hebron and Allen Knous (current issues and events and social studies), Rory McKenzie (debate and speaking events) and Larry Wisdom (prose interpretation). Wisdom and his wife Sue serve as the one-act play directors.

In total, more than 2500 students participated in the UIL Academic State Meet. All of Van’s 28 state-qualifying students have qualified for the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarships because of their participation at state. Since its inception in 1954, the TILF has awarded more than $24 million to more than 16,000 Texas high school students.
